Inspired by a PM chain with akhliber after he posted this in my abandon ship GA thread I figured I'd start yet another music thread, this time dedicated to a little known genre spawning multiple subgenres known as post-rock. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-rock

It's a very wide-ranging genre spawning multiple subgenres and a lot of bands people don't even realize could be considered post-rock in fact are.

Some of my favorites are the Constellation Records bands like Godspeed You!Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think and Thee Silver Mt.Zion. I'm also into the heavier sounds of Explosions in the Sky, Pelican, and Mogwai.

There are many more, not even touching on drone bands, post-metal, math-rock and shoegaze, etc.

I have to admit I was unfamiliar with this term. Had to go to the list of Post Rock bands, but here are the three that jumped out at me that I've heard of/listened to/enjoy:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Mogwai
Sigur Rós


I don't tend to look for music by category when I'm looking for something new. I usually end up searching out a band I like, finding 'similar' bands, then going from there. The journey often takes me to strange places and some interesting soundscapes. :)

What's interesting is that indirectly discussing this approach to music is what led to this thread, in a way. We were talking about how interest in some punk and post-rock bands ended up leading to an interest in neo-classical by way of either similar artists or shared band members. :)

I liked that, reminds me a bit of Mogwai and EITS.

Just figured I'd add a bit to this. Given the bands listed thus far (Godspeed You!Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think and Thee Silver Mt.Zion, Explosions in the Sky, Pelican, Mogwai, Sigur Rós), here are some bands / songs that I figured were worth sharing, for any with potential interest.
(Also, I love all of the above mentioned bands save for Pelican, which I have yet to hear. I'll remedy that today if I am able!)

Ok...about the 3 min mark of the Balmorhea song and I have to say I really like what they're doing, thanks for posting them!

Only ever heard Dirty Three before, and have actually seen that vid from All Tomorrow's Parties before, but it's quite good:) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are another band I really like. There's so many bands/artists I can say that about and yet do not listen to consistently. Like these folks:

Man or Astro-man? who I actually got really into because of that Touch n Go show. Not specifically post-rock at all but I suppose instrumental surf-rock is close enough, eh? Also, Sigur Ros is one of the most beautiful-sounding bands I've ever listened to, truly. When I heard they were going to record their own version of Rains of Castamere I was really excited, but I personally hate their version of the full song; the beginning sounds really haunting and great, reminded me a bit of Wardruna, but that was where the good part ended, imho:

Post-rock. What word-speak nonsense. Anyone you know ever refer to Beethoven as pre-rock? Or Lawrence Welk as post-polka? Jesus fucking post-christ.

Try enjoying music rather than find a new hipster way of classifying it while reorganizing your vinyl collection that you're so proud of... but never actually listen to.

I think it means more a continuation in the line of rock, but definitely after it. So, I wouldn't really count Beethoven as "pre-rock" :D

Personally, while all my fancy college friends had tried to push it on me, I didn't find much of it I cared about. To me it seemed droning and repetitive and hard to listen to.

I guess I can give 2 a pass.

Well, if people are referring to it as a form of music that has ascended after the death of true rock and roll, then I would agree. Rock is dead as Dillinger. Turn on MTV right now and then tell me I'm wrong.

Still, referring to a rock sub-genre by its ancestor roots would be like you or me referring to ourselves by our dead grandparents. Hi, my name is 'the last male descendant of John Smith III.' People would look at you crooked eyed for that... so putting the word 'rock' next to anything better have some meaning... otherwise, you're just selling something. Like so many other companies that feed on rock's legends like greedy vampires.

The term has been around for some time now, but I do agree that labels get tossed around way more than's necessary.

Sure, I get what you mean. Still, most genre names are like that. "Pop" music and "Classics" change every 5 years, genre names are compounded like crazy to create crossbreeds, and people call Beethoven "Classical", and "Downtempo" doesn't necessarily have a down tempo.
But yeah, it is probably a bit too late for "post-rock", I think the name's been around for about 20 years now. Many will probably disagree with me here, but perhaps "ambient rock" might be a suitable replacement word?

I guess that descriptor just never bothered me as much as some that are floating around.

That's just the kind of stupid post I'd expect from a "Post Punk Industrialist Neo Glam Quasi-Classical Pre-Birth Rock" fan!
