Good luck with trying to get a trade.

Since Portal 1 was free for a short while most people have it. I tried trading a copy last week but with no luck.
most people just give it away when they find console people who are moving over to windows I wouldn't be suprised if you found out that everyone who bought portal2 still has their free P1

Miaghstir: Though I already have the game, I'm willing to trade you a cheap GOG for the code so I can give it as a gift or prize or something later.
Word of warning, you can't regift a gift on Steam. Only the original recipient of the extra copy can gift it. So buying it in order to gift it to someone else isn't going to work.

So there's no system of plaintext codes?

Not on Steam.

Oh bugger. I was thinking one could get a code to register as retail.

No, sorry. Valve aren't that transparent with their gifting system (you won't even see the CD keys for games that have them until after the game is firmly tied to your account).

Though i can email the gift and they can forward it
As long you don't activate the gift on the email.

What was your plan ? Were you gonna gift it to someone?

While that's probably true, there's the whole issue of trust. Not saying you would, but some people have been known to sell gifts like that to several people and then have yet another person reclaim it. Naturally everyone else who paid for that gift won't be able to reclaim it; nor will Valve or anyone else be able to help reclaim that money. And is it really worth the risk for the sake of saving $4?

Also if you're that desperate to get rid of your extra copy, you're probably better off just giving it to one of the many people asking for a copy on the Steam forums.

Most probably a gift or prize in a future contest, certainly not getting someone to pay for it. The original reply was what Bansama quoted.
