The Wolfire blog has recently published a post which aims at dismantling the urban legend according to which piracy would amount to 90% of PC games.

What are you trying to say? So just because it's an urban legend or that piracy isn't THAT rampant, it's okay to do it?
Also:
Who will still play the damn World of Warcraft ten years from now, while here we're all playing Good Old Games again after decades? The MMO business is plain dumb, and short-sighted.

Oh aren't you an opinionated person with no basic grasp of business.

Ummm....thousands of people still play Ultima Online, a 13 year old MMORPG.

I know some dudes that would love to bring the hate to the yard, while I continue to bless you with shit that's sacred to y'all. Even if I had to bend you in place, I always put it down and rep my niggas from the most genuine place~
Blizzard is quietly retiring the original World of Warcraft, by replacing much of the original world & campaign with new content.
This was also done with Asheron's Call and EverQuest, but people just don't like seeing their fantasy world blown up. AC2 flopped terribly, and EQ2 is also a failure if you consider it's arguably a better game than WoW, which launched at the same time to a loyal fanbase.
Blizzard are making a shrewd move here, essentially forcing it down the players' throats by treating it as another expansion rather than a sequel. But it's one alternative to the fatigue and rot of endgame content grafting, which almost always hurts MMOs by making the low level experience empty & lonely as the games age.
The MMO business is mainly dumb for relying on carrot-stick tactics, which eventually causes burnout. The industry is learning its lesson, though, and you're seeing more of the *good* things about MMOs enter more traditional formats. Why? Because the MMO form's real appeal is simply that we can play online with as many people as we want. That's why so many modern MMOs have solo content, group instances or matches, and then open areas with chance encounters.
If we're lucky, someday every game released will be an MMO. And if you don't like it? You uncheck a little box, and I disappear from your screen. This future is well on its way already.

KingofGnG: I think there is space for everyone on the PC platform. And the so called "casual gaming" shit isn't where the big money is ... Who will still play the damn World of Warcraft ten years from now

Yeah I don't think that there's a big money pile on the casuals, most of it are the publishers/companies hyping the little games to make bigger sales, and keep the cycle going, since the games are simple to develop and likely to profit from. Once the player gets the basic idea of the market, he/she either waits for the games get discounted or evolve to purchasing in steam/whatever.
But there's a separate talk, about the DS, iPhone, iPad, etc...
And no way that MMOs are dying soon... WoW is 5+years old already and still sells a lot on retail IIRC even competing with The Sims and MW2, along with the river of money that Blizzard gets monthly from its subscriptions.
They are really smart about their business, the MMO's devs, and they won't be dumb by letting it die so easily. And it's not just the game quality that matters, it's also the human psychology being used to exploit the players and make them feel rewarded, etc.
I dislike MMOs too, but they are here to stay, much more than the casual and the indies. Some people really love their MMOs, you have to admit this. :/

Wishbone: Since when is Microsoft coming back to the PC? Links, please.

chautemoc: Here.

I've posted about alan wake some posts above, it's just a site release date and nothing confirmed.
And about fable 3, IIRC it was an employee who said shit. So we must still consider it as a rumor, not word already.

Err, I wouldn't feel lucky... I want my single-player story-driven games back! And of course, still continue developing some MP games.
But I do agree with you, everything now tends to be social, developed in mind with a hub or o a network of players.

tb87670: PC gaming will stay, but how many good years do we have left? If market keeps going way it has been then we will have a PC gaming market where the mainstream is really a sewer, Indie's will be only good games left and they have such low budget even some good ones can be a pain to play.

As the mainstream games get more and more simplified and made to be more movies than games, I actually think the PC will have a sweeping comeback as the only place to get real, deep and interesting gaming experiences.
The fact that all it takes to make a game on the PC is the time to do it will keep this platform alive on some level until there is no more PC platform at all.

Oh come on. I'm so sick of people claiming that if you want deep and interesting games you can only find them on PC. That is a silly misconception. The fact the the platform has more RTS games and a few "S.T.A.L.K.E.Rs" doesn't automatically make it more interesting. You can get a gaming experience that is as deep and interesting as on the PC.

Care to elaborate a list of deep, ps3 and x360-only titles?

Same for me, any way to elaborate on this imaginary list? Don't count a deep plot the end of COD4: MW where you watch the guy die of radiation, that's deep for a console and nothing on PC.

I dunno, Heavy Rain I suppose.
the final fantasies, fable 2, kameo, the darkness, lost odyssey
care to elaborate when you played a racing game lounged in your easy chair with your friends on your pc?

Check the links, you're mixing that with Halo: Reach.
Ah yes...the glorious PC gaming master race dissing console games....in a thread about 'respecting PC gaming', ironically.

tb87670:

Ah yes, the so called PC-elitists creep out. Why do PC-only gamers believe that only RTS, MMOs and some obscure western RPGs can be deep and involving.
As for the "imaginary" list... just to name a few games:
Plot-wise:
MGS4, Heavy Rain, inFamous, Eternal Sonata, Siren, Valyria Chronicles, Alan Wake, Yakuza 3. Halo
Gameplay/Design-wise:
Little Big Planet, Forza, GT, Demons Souls, Armored Core, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, ModNation Racers
You see, the difference between me and you is that I don't have anything against PC games or PC as a platform. Yet you feel the need bash console gaming for an unknown reason (although I would guess you simply have never owned any console in your life). Does it make you feel any better?

Catshade: Ummm....thousands of people still play Ultima Online, a 13 year old MMORPG.

Ok, so let's just be more specific: the largest part of MMO games except for a few ones will be shit in 2-3 years. So the MMO business is dumb. Hail to the dedicated on-line servers feature!
