Duke: Manhattan Project

This game is WAY underrated. I am not big on platformers but I could play this one all day and all night. One day I'll get it here just to get rid of my hard copy.

Already finished that one. It wasn't mentioned much back when it came out, but it's quite addictive and well-done. I got it bundled with the graphics card along with Morrowind when I purchased a new computer back in the day.

Skills, levels and maybe dialogue in some recommendations?

Has anyone mentioned Un-Epic to you? It's actually an RPG dressed up as a platformer with the look and feel of the platformer with the skills/levels/and dialogue. It's not everyone's cup of tea and actually inspired a hilarious thread by an offended customer.
Maldita Castilla: http://www.locomalito.com/maldita_castilla.php

A tribute to the golden era arcade from my fellow countryman Locomalito. And hey, it's free!
Dangerous Dave here on GOG, the Commander Keen games from elsewhere .
I would recommend Eternal Daughter from Derek Yu and Poacher from Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw.

Both are of very high quality, challenging, but not frustrating and free.

Cave Story if don't mind Metroidvania with your platforming, but it has towns and a level up system for health and weapons.

Rogue Legacy is really good I hear but I haven't played it yet. Super House of Dead Ninjas is pretty fun though, that I have played.

I've never played Zeliard, and it's made by a developer I like alot (GameArts). I will have to see if there is some easy for me to play that.

Leroux: I'm going to break your rules and suggest a game that's on Desura (still waiting to be greenlit on Steam):

Super Panda Adventures

It's cartoony, it has RPG/character progression elements (you get xp, level up and can distribute points to various melee, ranged combat and magic abilities) and it's a Metroidvania type of game, meaning it's not strictly linear but allows you to wander around and explore, go back and forth within and between levels and do side quests. It has a checkpoint system, but IMO it's acceptable, and the jumping parts aren't overdone either. Fighting your opponents (in whatever way you choose) is a higher priority. My only gripe with it is that it has boss battles which I found much too difficult and boring compared to the addictive rest of the game.

I think it's currently 50% off, and you can download a demo and/or the free and similar (but not quite) zombie survival platformer Gun Girl 2 from the developer's website.
Ah, yes. I think this will hit the spot. Thanks for the recommendation!
La-Mulana is GOG's best platformer. Mixes Zelda puzzles with Castlevania gameplay and Indiana Jone's style.
Radon would be cross if no one mentioned Turrican. Modern iterations (quite similar to the originals) are Hurrican and T2002. I believe the originals themselves are also freely available.
Fortune Summoners - part RPG, part platformer.

Leroux' description for Super Panda Adventures fit quite well here too, though the game doesn't look quite as colourful.

You have a party of up to three people with different abilities and fighting styles (starting off with one and meeting the others on the way) that you can switch between (those you're not actively controlling will follow you around and fight on their own). Inns and specific places in dungeons act as multi-use savepoints. Along with experience, you earn cash to spend on upgraded weapons, armour and other items.

It's marked as "DRM-free" on Gamersgate, which means you need to use the Gamersgate downloader to get and launch the installer the first time, but when the installer has launched you can copy it elsewhere and then keep it without the downloader/decryptor annoyance.

This looks neat (especially the art direction), but the price is a bit steep. Is the game long enough to justify it?

That entirely depends on how well you play it, I estimate I put some 30-40 hours into it, but it could perhaps be done in 15 or 20. You do need to grind a bit to get enough money for upgraded (and necessary) weapons.

Demo downloadable here (though I haven't played the demo, so I don't know how well it shows off the actual game).

If I recall correctly, it's about 20-30h long. I bought it for the full price and didn't regret it, but I think there's a demo availbale from Carpe Fulgur's website, too, if you're unsure whether you'd enjoy it.
OK, I'll check it out after I finish Super Panda Adventures. Got it from Desura yesterday; enjoying it quite a bit!
