Hi, major shmup fan here. Please can you tell me any and all shmups you know of on GOG.com please.

I already know of Tyrian 2000 and Humans Must Answer. Games can be horizontal or vertical. I also like shooters like Alien Swarm (not a shmup) so please tell me any good ones you know.

It is a shmup. Not that it means anything but even its Wikipedia page says so. Restricting the genre to games where you're in an aircraft or spacecraft is absurd.

Chaos Engine is another overhead shooter - a remake of the Amiga classic

You might like incoming too - its more of a straight 3D shooter than Wing Commander but at the same time its not quite a rail shooter

Oddly enough, people usually understand "shmups" to be games with (quasi)-linear and controlled progression (bullet hell shmups being yet another sub-category), as opposed to the broader "shoot-em-up" genre, which encompasses anything with guns and a focus on shooting.

Alien Breed is pretty damn shootie, in a Gauntlet kind of way.

But I concur with jamyskis, SHMUP pretty much means a very specific kind of game (typically a forced scrolling shooter), and there are just a handful of those here.

I am not sure if I should say it here but you should give Savant - Ascent a go. Once you unlock the endless mode, it's rather addicting :D Also, it's so hard core it doesn't have a pause function or any power ups that restore health :D
