jjsimp: Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but Shroud of the Avatar is putting houses in...It's a money maker for them as they are charging you for the house and charging for property tax unless you donated over $500.
Are you serious? They should have an estate economy in-game but charging real money is so lame. Ugh..

Perhaps it will be in game, but they are actively pushing if you donate x amount of money, the property tax is waved. I think the lowest amount where it is waved is $500.

Edit: Here's a blurb from their latest email

200 Village Property Deeds Available in Add-On Store

We have added 200 Village Lot Property Deeds to the Add-On Store at an introductory price of $150 (a 25% discount off the regular $200 price)!

Village Lot Property Deeds purchased through the Add-On Store will have an in game currency tax that must be paid monthly or the lot reverts to being for sale and the Lot Deed is returned to the owner. Backers at Citizen level and above receive a tax exempt Lot Deed. All lot deeds are transferable between players.

KneeTheCap: It's a shame that WoW, for instance, does not have any kind of player housing. Well, they have the damn farm, but that doesn't really count.

Really odd. There are roleplaying servers, yet they do nothing to encourage roleplay...
Funny, they can add Pandaren, Pokemon-esque minigame and farming but they can't afford to make virtual housing?

Smells of lazy to me.
All the housings in the realm and you must kill to get one.

Well that bring money to their coffer. I don't see it as a problem. We can always opt out in getting a (virtual) house.

Might and Magic 7. You get your own castle early in the game. It's in a very bad shape but you can get it renovated and later on even upgraded. Your actions will determine what will happen with it, a nearby city and surroundings - either you'll get your own kingdom or join humans or elves...

amok: They never had the technology for it from the start (like LotrO, where the homesteads is basically different instances), and it would now become to much of a hassle to implement. There is also a to big user base (10 million houses?), especially since many dedicated wow players have an arsenal of alts (I had 7 mains at a time....). It means there is a lot of space needed to run the housing.

It is a shame, yes, but technologically I can see how it would be difficult to implement.

EverQuest Next, on the other hand, is going to be built on a voxel engine, and it looks like players can build houses and towns there, thought it will still be very restricted.

edit- sprelling
Star Wars Galaxies, as I mentioned, managed to even have whole player-made towns built not only of player housing but also community buildings like a town hall, and not in an instanced area either, anyone getting near while on quests or whatnot could see the place (though only people with permission from the house owner could enter the houses, which were instanced). I was always jealous of that back when I played World of Warcraft.

Blizzard certainly could have added in-world housing (or housing at all) if they thought it a worthwhile effort.

The depends. I'm one of those that dislike the idea of having practical advantage in any kind of games because you pay real money. I consider a house a practical feature as you will likely be able to store items in it, perhaps use it as a respawn point in case you die etc..

If all there is some kind of appearance thing with bragging rights then it doesn't matter they require real money to use it.
Puzzle Pirates has excellent housing. You can own your own dilapidated shack and fill it with bales of hemp, aging scrolled maps and a rickety cot. Certainly, you can have a fine stately home, too, but the gritty accommodations and furnishings are much more piratey, I feel.
Has anyone mentioned The Sims yet?
Oh and the Witcher I where you can get your own useless shack from the hermit in Chapter IV?

That's why we need to be genre savvy enough when it's regarding F2P games. If the paid stuff is breaking the base then it's time to GTFO from that game and try other games.

I guess they want their world to be like the real world: Rich people having all the advantages. I'm with you, I hate that aspect and I hate game cheats.
Was there some kind of house in Vampire: Redemption too? I remember a chest to store extra stuff and a place to sleep at... day but is one home that you're just given what OP meant?
Puzzle Quest has a castle thing where you can craft stuff and that too...
If OP does mean a house/home that is yours that you can do stuff in then Shemui had that too, I guess Fallout with Vault 13 too even though you keep getting locked out, always thought it was odd there was no family to greet you or cell to call your own when you WERE let back in too...

I know it's not realistic, but I like how BG1&2 games did all the chests and stuff in the games. It would save whatever you put in the chests. I had stashes of stuff in just about every tavern in those games.
This is making me want to replay the Baldur's Gate games, since I've realized that I only actually ever had one stronghold (the keep).
