I think this article is not new.
I've read ridiculous things in my life but this is just absurd.

President Reagan did something similar with Ketchup back in the 80s, declaring it to be a vegetable for the purposes of cafeteria nutrition even though it contains precisely zero vegetables.

The whole thing is just the latest effort to cut the President off at the knees so that the GOP can get back in the White House, fortunately, I think even GOP voters aren't quite that stupid.
let's hope so

Good to hear that I eat a lot of vegetables then. At least a couple every week.
I think you'll find it's actually a drink:

Why do media outlets keep reporting it like this? Headline is so misleading, might as well be an NBC sitcom.

It's:
1) Tomato sauce, not pizza, but TOMATO SAUCE
2.) Not about changing the definition, but about considering it as such for the purposes of the program
Incidentally I find it interesting that when you take a fruit like a tomato, and turn it into a paste, it becomes a vegetable.

EDIT: Yes, I know that the U.S. Courts class tomato as a vegetable, but they're wrong!

Lol, I think there is a consensus that no one know what pizza sauce is, except for people who know what their talking about. And tomatoes are fruit, so in no definition does processed purée fit into the vegetable category. I would partially disagree with hedwards, I think it's probably some lobby that is behind this (probably associated with Herman Cain), as I remember the Potato lobby being behind keeping fries in school meals (although those are more carbohydrates than vegetables, wrong category again). The Republicans are just going along to spite Obama.

If a glass of red wine a day is good for you, then why not a slice of pizza?

While tomatoes are scientifically fruit, the consensus in cooking technique is that they are used as vegetables. By the way this is also applicable to eggplants, peppers, peas,... Reverse cases are rare but do exist (rhubarb).

And, well, there should be no objection to having tomatoes, eggplants , whatever served in schools, although about all other preparations would be preferable to pizze ( The problem with pizze is about what actually ends up in and on it ). Tomato leaves would be less tempting. Slightly toxic too...

Just remember that Beaujolais Nouveau is not wine.

If they going to vegetablize pizzas they should compensate that by giving the children berry-carrying exercises. A basket with four or five should do the kids in, with a proper choice of berries.
You know what *I* really hate? People who class milk as a liquid. It's not a liquid. It's a COLLOIDAL MIXTURE. While on the whole it behaves like a liquid, and it contains liquids, it's not a liquid. It's more complicated than that!*

Talk to your senators. I want milk to be reclassified immediately!

*note that this distinction is basically meaningless unless you're doing that newfangled biochemistry cooking.

Understanding the science is good for ones cooking technique so you don't under or over cook things. And remember they'll keep cooking for a bit after you take them out of the oven.
