I work as an ICT assistant/technician: I once spent almost half an hour explaining icons, folders and files and how to click on them to a couple of people.
If you've done this job, or have any decent skills at all, you know the type: as soon as you explain a double click or right click, you get asked 'which one' (and have to reiterate) every single time, no matter what you tell them about a 'single left click' default action :D
Along with the (incorrectly perceived) idea that cracked games are a simple "run and play" This is not too surprising really :)
Good for a laugh though!

Ahh, ever been asked which key is the "any" key...oh the wonderful world of call center customer interaction... so glad I don't do that anymore.

i think it was the fact that the first gears had abysmal sales in comparison, and UTIII, the sequel to a PC staple, also flopped.
I think he's mostly right in that the people who are interested in Gears for PC, would also know how to pirate it. whether they know how to install it or not is a separate issue.

You know what blows my mind about the endless DRM race? DRM isn't cheap. Licensing starforce, securerom or any of the others cost quite a bit of money, and deters only the most casual pirates. It's very hard to imagine what the expected gain is when putting this on a budget.

well the cost of drm is known and can be budgeted for, the cost of not using it is not known and therefore nobody want's to take the gamble with a big release.

The real irony in CliffyB's statement is that apparently console users are "computer-savvy" enough to pirate Gears of War 2 for the consoles, too. I really wonder, how well would SecuROM with limited online activations sit with console gamers?
His comment on the difference of the PC from "back in the day" is also odd, to say the least. In the DOS days, it'd take a fairly computer savvy user just to get a game to run, due to having to deal with memory allocation, for instance. I don't suppose they were less equipped to pirate games.

I think your getting the lines mixed up. He is saying 'back in the day' devs didnt have the problem of integrated graphics, which makes PC less favourable to develop for. Yes people did have to have some amount of savvy to get DOS games running, and piracy did exist, but it was far less of a concern. The internet and torrents really changed everything.
If roughly X amount of PCs have the CPU to power the game, you have to subtract Y amount who dont have the video power to run the game (due to integrated graphics) and Z who will just pirate it. X minus Y and Z = your potential market. Unfortunately Y and Z will probably get worse before they get better.

I work for an ISP and like all ISP's we shut people down for piracy (sharing copyrighted material). These people are generally retarded. I can ask them 'Do you have a wireless network?" and they're all 'wat?' and I can ask 'What operating system are you using?' and they say 'Internet explorer!' and I can ask 'What's your name?' and they will reply the name on the account, even though they are not the account holder.
'I just wanted to watch the shrek christmas special!'
'are you telling me i can't download?'
'am i going to go to jail for this?'

True, most of these people are either retarded kids who think they're "teh h4xxxx0rz" yet have got little or no knowledge whatsoever, or just computer illiterate morons. Get a life, buy games instead of pirating them and stop nagging normal people with silly questions. More importantly: JFGI
