Neobr10: Consoles and PCs are different and will always be. Their purposes are totally different. Consoles are made to run games, PCs are not, playing games is just another function.
avatar
xyem: Interesting...

Recently I've developed the opinion that they are actually converging somewhat.
BLASPHEMER!!

STONE HIM, STONE HIM!

SimonG: Yeah, sorry. I'm not making a decision on that. If I can switch a game into 60 FPS fine. But I sure as hell won't ignore a game because it doesn't run with 60. On the list of things I care about in a game, this isn't even on the first page.
Who said about ignoring games who run slow? Come on..

avatar
keeveek: Most movies released are operating on 25-27 FPS, and I may say, they run pretty smoothly :P
Technically speaking it's not the same thing, movies use good amount of motion blur to make it look fluid and that technology is apparently really good. Some games support it too but it's far inferior.

There are tests people looking at 24FPS and 48FPS movies and they can spot the difference even with the typical motion blur they use.

avatar
Fenixp: I've been playing at stable 60 FPS for years and don't see a difference at all when I start gaming at my wife's notebook @ 25-30 FPS. I just don't see it. I do, however, see a very minor difference on some of the animations other people posted, so I suppose even I somewhat understand it now.
Did you check those balls links where you can compare? The one where they are set aside is especially good but remember to turn off motion blur or you won't get a "realistic" comparison as all games don't support that.

Anyway, if low FPS is fine then there's something useful you can do. All games that do run at 60FPS can be limited to a lower FPS to save performance for a higher graphical setting and/or to avoid your computer overheating. For nVidia there's a tool called Nvidia Inspector where you can limit the FPS without Vertical Sync from 1 to 120 and probably even more. For AMD however I don't know.

Magmarock: That's very ironic, but did you know they are re-releasing FF7 on PC? I'm looking forward to it :P
avatar
Lodium: Huh.FF7 is already out in digital format.
Just head over to SE
http://na.square-enix.com/finalfantasyvii/go/article/view/blog/259589/final_fantasy_vii_pc_now_available! for north america and https://store.eu.square-enix.com/emea_europe/pc-windows-download/FINAL-FANTASY-VII.php for Europe.

Edit : Seams i missed that you were from Australia
Hmm, wasnt FF7 PC digital Version released globally???!!
Unless you meant that they are going to release it yet another time.
I wonfder if my pc digital copy will be updated if they do.

I dont get the pc vs Console wars either
The arguments seams rather pointless to me.
I mean, you wont be rewarded in most cases if you stick true to a platform.
At least i never got anything, neither praise or rewards and i own basicly all platforms.
Yeah, that's the one I was talking about.

A little bit too low brow for me, but hey, maybe that's because I prefer PC.
If you're PC savy - then PC, even though you'll end up having to do a lot of patching, hacking and editing to get your games to work, they're a lot lot cheaper.

If you're not too swift with a PC - Console is much safer and was even more before games had online access and updates.
The debate is moot, since tablets are clearly superior.

Lol XD
I have no problem with consoles except they are shit when it comes to quality. However, this last generation was fucked.

I still had an original working NES, XBOX, PS2, and N64...

hmmm, lets see...3 PS3's that all died from various issues, and usually right as soon as the warranty passed. 2 XBOX 360's that died pretty much within six months.

Now, i had my original compaq computer that i was able to coax to live 10 years before it finally had the processor fail. (I purposely left it on 24/7 and never cleaned it to see how long it could withstand the punishment.)

I honestly believe that Microsoft and Sony both put out an inferior product with a crappy warranty to keep the masses buying there shit. I will not buy into the next generation unless i see better quality, because they both need to work on that shit.

well in the old cartridge days it made a lot more sense. Though I have to admit that I chuckled when I read "I have no problem with consoles except they are shit when it comes to quality."

I don't know why I find it so funny, maybe its' because I think it's too true :P
PC gaming flew past console gaming sometime in the late 90s/early 2000s. The gap has just widened since then.

I'm talking about quality, not popularity.

This, migth be true.
Ive heard that some people got their ps3 and xbox360 broken rigth after the waranty.
Mine still works but im under the impression that the consoles of old lasted much longer than anything we have today.
My snes and sega master system still works and i know a couple of friends that have atari
and they still work.

I think its maybe a willed development from the industry.
The society we have today is more of a consumer & trhow away than it was maybe 15 years ago.

But its not only the industrys fault its also the consumers fault
Before the plastic age of mass produced goods and planned obsolescence people used to repair things when they were broken.
I wont say it applys for all, theres still people that care for their old stuff even if spare parts
gets incresingly harder to get a hold of for each year.

This is a serious concern. Our so "mighty" society is shoving your own grave with that consumism logic. Humanity always overrated. were not so smart and racional as we want to believe.

About the "pc x console". In my chilhood, in the 90´s, was a Genesis player. Changed to pc cause there discovered my favorite type of games: strategy and rpgs. Mostly stay on pc cause there arent good options at that game style on consoles. And besides console for sure is more comfortable to play (they were made for that duh), pc offers a multimedia center (well, consoles are starting doing this too) and are moddable.

AFnord: Some minor factual errors in there, but not too far from being spot on :P
Minor? That thing was so full of bullshit I don't even know where to start:

"You can build a decent gaming PC that will last 5 years for about the price of a retail console" - Retail consoles cost 200-300 bucks, no fucking way

"Even after those 5 years all you need is a graphics card upgrade" - Bullshit, the cases where you can actually do this are so miniscule they're not worth counting, said graphics card upgrade may still run you 150 bucks even if you can do it.

"You have to re-invest in a new console every 3 years" - Seriously? When was this video made? 2000? The 360 and PS3 have been going now for what? 8 years?

"Voice chat is free on PC" - No it is fucking not, you god damned leach, someone else is paying for your Ventrilo server or footing the bill to host one. Just because you foist the cost of your shit off onto other people does not make it "free".

"Competitive gaming is only on PC" - I'm pretty sure that million dollar BF3 tournament was a console tourney. It lives in both worlds.

"Shitty ass description of Aim assist" - almost no console title has ever done aim assist as he described and it hasn't worked like most PC only players believe for at least half a decade.

I get it, funny, haha, but I feel sorry for anyone who thinks any of this is accurate, almost none of it is, it's like self referential mockery of PC elitism, the problem being when you present parody like this, inevitably some people are going to agree with you and miss the parody part.

Damuna: I know there are highly specialised gaming keyboards, but it seems like building upon something which at its most basic isn't fit for purpose.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks keyboards are inherently bad as a gaming device. I swear I really don't know if people are conflating "good" with "less shitty" or not. It's lonely here.
