It's not dying, it's simply shedding its physical form and ascending to a higher plane of existence.

Oh shit...It is reaching nirvana. Quick, stop it before we lose it!
I should really stop reading about Hinduism...

Wishbone: I was trying to be sarcastic, but apparently that didn't shine through.

The problem was that it simply isn't true here anymore. Sure, online retailers of boxed copies trounce Steam's pricing, but the high street really, really doesn't.

Wishbone: I know that Steam has blessed you with your own non-Euro prices in the UK, which tend to not shaft you as badly as the rest of us.

Exactly, why I made the distinction between the situation in the UK and the Euro countries. Not having the Euro here does make quite a difference, and it's not always negative. But it seems that other than Steam's uh, pricing discrepancies, things are very much the same.

That's why I feel doubly shafted by Steam. We don't have the Euro either, but I'm still forced into Steam's Euro pricing scheme if I want to buy from them. So I don't.
It is dying. But like the phoenix, the PC rises from the pixels and becomes even stronger.
Thank you.

So you should still be with the USD site then. That's more than a little unfortunate. And yes, there's no way I'd buy from Steam if we had the Euro site too. It's a right rip off. The UK has it bad enough. But luckily many of their deals are actually cheaper here (edit: than the US site).
I'm just surprised enough people buy from the Euro site to stop Valve from thinking about changing it back.

10-1 it doesn't resurrect as many times as Daniel ;)

Hopefully it won't ascend into Ori. Though with all of the DRM...
You made the mistake of looking for PC games in HMV.
From a personal perspective, no.
From a business perspective, yes.
Let's face it, piracy alone has pretty much caused a few PC developers to jump ship or move to making console ports. Combined with the PC's long standing tradition of bigger, better, and more expensive hardware coming out every 6 months, whereas the 360 and PS3 are 5 and 4 years old at reduced prices now, companies don't give a shit about PC gamers anymore.
The ones who do are smaller companies, or ones that focus on PC almost exclusively (EX: Blizzard)
The PC has the capability to out perform consoles any day of the week, but I have to wonder if companies are being told not to develop said games for fear of forcing people into buying PC's for an ultimate game.
Interesting bit from 1C on Rock Paper Shotgun, saying that digital distribution will be the only way for the PC by 2011.
They seem to be missing that games are getting larger (as always) but that there are still quite a lot of people without adequate internet connections.
Cheapest way to get new games for me tends to be play.com or amazon. I still check GAME, Gamestation etc. from time to time to see if they have any offers on (usually in vain).
Either way, PC gaming isn't dying at all. Changing perhaps, but certainly not dying.

Over here, retail boxed copies are outrageously expensive, so they also seem like they're dying. However, ordering from amazon is easy and instead of asking to have them sent to you internationally, there are courier services with offices in Miami and they charge you by the weight of the product you buy. So when i order (with free super saving shipping) and the little plastic box with a simple DVD that weighs precious little arrives, i get charged about 4 or 5 bucks.
I haven't bought a game in a local retail store in ages and that's one of the things also keeping me from buying a console since most games for those systems are around $50 or $60 retail and the price rarely ever comes down after a while like it does in the US.
Anybody looking for a real on-line deal for REAL MYST ? . . . =)
