Another example of a big company too far in the safe and clear to care whether or not it has become too big for it's britches.

This is why I say don't invest all of your eggs in one basket because one day that basket will steam slap you and drop all of your eggs!

PayPal Refuse to Release Yatagarasu AoC Funding

Bad news. Today we found out this morning that PayPal have restricted Nyu Media’s PayPal account and are refusing to release funding raised for Yatagarasu AoC.

The email from PayPal advises us that they have ‘reserved’ the funding and will release ‘up to 50% of the funds’ before Yatagarasu AoC is released and the rest only after they have verified copies of paid invoices. What’s more, they provide no option to discuss, stating we should ‘contact us closer to the release date beginning of next year’ to arrange release of the funds.

We appreciate irony as much as the next person, but PayPal refusing to provide funds legitimately raised to complete a game until after the game is released isn’t just beyond ridiculous – it potentially derails the game development. To add insult to injury, not only do Nyu Media and the Yatagarasu developer team have rock solid track records, but we’ve already provided PayPal with documents providing the bona fides of Nyu Media, the developer, and the campaign.

To be fair, we should have seen this coming – it doesn’t take much research to find other examples of PayPal’s practice of refusing to release funds for crowdfunding campaigns (e.g. Skullgirls, Glassup), but chalk this up to our misplaced faith that PayPal might have changed their approach since then.

We are discussing implications with the Yatagarasu development team and will press our case with PayPal UK’s customer service when they open tomorrow. Best case scenario: reason and PayPal’s new “Customer First” direction bring this to a swift conclusion; worst case scenario: we may end up refunding PayPal contributions and arranging donations by other methods. Please stand by and we will provide updates just as soon as possible.

Sorry to hear that. I have had a pleasure to deal with Paypal's support on more than one occasion lately and I have to say I'm already avoiding to pay with this account. It seems that when something goes wrong with transfer, you can count on Paypal that your money ends up in a black hole.

They have left contact form's message without reply even 6 days until I remind myself (+2-3 days). They always send copy-pasta answer and expect me to do the legwork. And when I do, they send the same reply again. Yes, I am sure that it's always a failure of the store who cashes a part of money and plays innocent. Never mind that it has happened with others and that it happens only when using PayPal. I know it's just a weird coincidence. Jerks.

Only had one problem with a purchase I made via paypal, it was BG Enhanced Edition, the game wouldnt work due to some severe release bugginess, I contacted Paypal and complained about it, I had a refund within I think, about 24 hours-ish.

On saying that, I cant see why they would refuse to release funds for something that has noting to do with them (afaik), unless some pledgers complained about some aspect of the project.

The sad thing, why is there no other payment service we can use other than Paypal? it's like they are monopolizing the international e-money transfer market.

Amazon Payments, Google Checkout, there are a few, but they're not widely supported just yet.

Google checkouts looks interesting. If they can integrate it with Android it can be big.

I think the side of paypal that deals with crowd funding needs to take a long hard look at itself and either play ball and release the funds as they are supposed to or refuse to have their service used for that kind of transaction. There are other services that crowd funded games can us and will likely have less hassle with.

I think Google Checkout is a predecessor of Google Wallet. There are plans to shut down Google Checkout.

So they did that. Now if Google Wallet works like Steam Wallet and it offer large amount of options to fill the wallet I will be a happy clam. Especially if it offer great option for my country.

PayPal are assholes.

They have a very bad reputation for 'freezing funds' for ridiculous reasons. All to their benefit, of course, as the sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars they freeze in accounts makes them more interest while the people who the money legitimately belongs to can't access it.

I rarely use them and, if I have money in my PP account, it immediately gets transferred to my bank account -- every penny -- as I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

Their customer service too is abysmal, with reps who don't seem to have a clue what they're doing.

I just tried to buy something thru them last week -- my payment was denied every time even though I had about 10 times what the payment was in my PP account. Contacted support TWICE and told both times, "No problem. Your account has been amended so this payment will go through".

Guess what? Payment denied two more times.

I finally sent them a nasty email and used my debit card instead. Went through in seconds.

I'd advise anyone who uses PP to keep either zero money in your account, or the minimal amount as they are a company that cannot be trusted. Unfortunately, it's par for the course with many large American corporations these days -- that's why I avoid using most of them. They're just as bad as PayPal. Bad reputation for freezing funds or refusing to make payments.

And....it's Google, who is willingly sending all your personal information to the NSA and the US government. Couldn't pay me to touch them with a 10 foot pole.

So what other options we got? Western Union?
