bansama: Not at all. If it's an issue that only affects certain versions of Windows, such as CJK based ones, then GOG will not test for it. The issue I have with Interstate is specific to certain non English versions of Windows and requires changing system unicode settings to solve it.

This is an issue that is still very common with other games, such as many EA ones that force the use of certain characters in game names/install paths, and so forth. Even Dungeon Defenders, at release, had the same issue.
is that a big issue? wouldn't installing english language for the windows solve the problem? or it would break your system/wouldn't solve anything?

Yes. Just having the English language pack installed does not fix it, as it still uses the default CJK unicode handling. When you switch to the Western version, it tends to break most CJK OS based programs -- they can no longer display text correctly.

It wouldn't be such an annoyance if Windows was able to swap that handling on the fly, but it can't. You have to reboot the entire system. Having to do that each and every time you want to play a specific game just means that game never gets played due to the annoyance.

Not in my experience. They all seem to default to GOG Games no matter how many times I install elsewhere. EDIT: After using the solution below, now they are defaulting to PROGRA~2.

Starkrun: I was able to install fine using the non-8dot3 file name.... here is proof in the image... use this from now on to install into (x86) works on every game listed... C:\PROGRA~2\

The installer writes a tiny bit-o-code in the OS to remember the last used install location so from now on this should work as long as your using the new installers...

as an FYI a few weeks ago i updated everything, and even though gog said i didn't have updates over 20 games in my collection went up entire version numbers. So if your an archiver it might be best to update all your games.

I'm not sure I actually want the updated installers for games that haven't themselves been updated. They seem to have removed the option to use your own version of DOSBox, a feature that I used to make extensive use of.

Because those games are not updated, those are installer versions.

I'm pretty sure that they won't contact the police over this, at least as long as this is your
first time, but if I were you I would be quick about removing those illegal characters.

No, I'm talking about the option that let you say "I already have DOSBox, here's where it is", to which the installer would say "Ok, I'll link the short cuts to that one instead of placing a redundant version in the install folder".
They have removed that option as far as I can tell. Sure I can change all that manually, but the point is that I didn't have to before.

It's generally a bad idea to install games in the Program Files folder.

If more people realised this, perhaps modern games wouldn't mess up my "My Documents" folder by spewing config files and save games there.
