Overpricing to facilitate sales is a common practice nowadays. I could literally walk around my supermarket today and tell you what is going to be promo'd the following week by simply looking for unrealistic price hikes on certain items. Thing is the practice actually seems to work, how often do you hear people say "it was reduced from £n" before they tell you what they actually paid for it, like the original price is somehow relevant.

I would imagine >75% of GOG revenue comes from sales. If they can get the figure they were thinking of in the first place from a sale, who can blame them for trying?

Just make your purchases based on asking price alone. If it's too expensive wait for a sale, if it's still too expensive buy it elsewhere.

Pricing is, well, I don't want to use the term 'relative', but there is no universal yardstick.

My neighbor's house has been on the market for over a year. Nice place, in good shape, just needs the kitchen to be bumped ahead about 45 years and the garage should be redone. The price seems a bit high... compared to others in the area. Uproot the place and move it to, say San Franciso and it would be the bargain of the decade at that price.

Customer calls looking for a part. I have the servo motor they want, $2,000. They say that's a lot of money. Yep, sure is. And it's less than a quarter of the price they'll find it anywhere else in the country, because it's, just me and one other seller that have one. At that point, with the machine out of operation, is it still priced high? Another customer called 8 months prior looking for the same motor and was thrilled that I had one, and at so much less than the other domestic source. Customer opinion says that I priced it both too high and too low, even though it was the same price both times. Which one do I believe?

Go to a garage sale and look at clothes. $2 for a shirt, $5 for a jacket, both practically brand-new. After the garage sale is over, the family donates the unsold stuff to Goodwill where those items go on the rack for $8 and $25. Are they overpriced? I could have gotten them a week before for much less, but those prices are still lower than new ones would cost.

Game shows up in the catalog, listed at $20 with a few expansions and tested to work on the latest OS. I don't need it but would like it. Some folks can find it in-store locally for $5. I can't. If I spend $5-8 in gas hitting a few stores on a crap shoot, and it isn't anywhere to be had, is $20 still too much for the (potentially) many hours of gameplay, and for not having to go foraging in the stores to find it? If a thousand people buy it within a couple weeks of release, is it overpriced or is it priced just right? If the price is lowered to $9.99 and sales don't double, was it the right move?

Roman5 is sometimes obnoxious, but I agree with the intent and purpose of this mix as well as the thread itself, and I think the RCT3 release is cause for something like it.

Please. As soon as anyone is willing to offer products as compelling as GOG's, disregarding something better, I'll be first in line. It's a matter of supporting a quality product, any website can spew some bits onto my hard drive, but GOG offers a bit more than just a game's files.

I agree with some of those, especially the Tom Clancy games and the Sierra 1+2+3 bundles.

The games most often on sale are the ones most reasonably priced in the first place. So your logic doesn't apply here. For instance, Ubisoft games are seldom in sales and at least half their games are blatantly overpriced here.
