Dang it, my laptop likes to shut itself off during a game. Like yesterday, I was playing some Half-Life 2 (thanks Metalstar on IRC), when the computer just turned itself off. Like, boom. I felt the those small vents on the back of my laptop, and it was burning! Know any tips/tricks I can do to stop it from shutting itself like that? And please don't tell me to get those cooling pads, they're out of my budget.

hansschmucker: Since my internal cooling has gone bye-bye (which apparently is the norm for Toshiba laptops), I've been using a Titan G4 and have been very happy:
Sliding design for various notebook sizes
Powered via USB
4 fans
Dedicated on/off switch
It's not the most silent cooler you can get, but the volume is acceptable for 4 fans.
does it also include a usb hub to make due the fact you're sacrificing one port for the whole comp?

JudasIscariot: Let the comp breathe. Make sure no vents are blocked off and clean off any dust or detritus it may have in the vents. If you're feeling brave, you could take the bottom panels off and spray one of those cans of compressed air to clean off the components.
Perhaps, you could get a small fan and point it at the laptop/PC to cool it off.

michaelleung: Thanks! My fan/vents didn't have a lot of dirt, but I realized that my crap on my small Ikea table was blocking off, giving me way less than the 5cm (inches?) gap, making it easy to overheating with warm air. So I moved my laptop next door in the home office with a bigger table, and it works! Thanks, now I know how I can play HL2 anywhere!

Congratulations! Now go frag some newbs! :-)

Nope, but that's kinda the whole point: You don't need an external power adapter. If it were to include an active hub (a passive one wouldn't be any good, as the fans eat up all the power they can get), you would need one :)

I've used one like you have, but I also have seen that use the existing power from the lappy to power both a fan and a usb hub. :)

Well, you can put a passive USB hub between your laptop and the cooler, the problem is that you won't be able to use the ports for anything but devices which have their own power supply, like printers pr HDDs.

those are primarily the kind of devices I use with my laptop anyway. :D

But then loosing an USB port isn't important anyway, is it? I mean, if you're at home, you probably have a USB hub connected anyway (at least I have).

I only have one USB hub and it's in use for Rockband.
