Yeesh, i thought DAO's 'i'm not sure if i'm fighting or taking a dump' running animations were terrible, but that one...
If it was a rollerskating animation it wouldn't be bad, but as a running animation, good lord.

Ralackk: A couple of those youtube videos showed a first person perspective can you move about and play in that mode or is it just a static aiming thing?

If I recall correctly, when you ride an alien creature, the perspective switches, but aiming and moving is all in third person.

Mentalepsy: I played Outcast a couple years after it came out, and it ran like crap at its embarrassing maximum resolution of 512x384, probably thanks to its software rendering. The game was fun, but not fun enough to keep me trudging through it at 15fps.
I'm not sure what to expect from it on my current computer.

Expect awesomeness.

Plays well on a modern Vista PC, doesn't feel like 15fps. The resolution is horrible but if they sorted that it would be awesome, as it's a very good-looking game.

Maybe so, but the game itself is just fantastic. The atmosphere and balance of action and adventure is top notch.

Oh, i'll get it and try it out anyway, don't worry ;)
It was just a remark from what i saw on some videos on YouTube, but considering the praise it's getting around here i definitely want to play it and make my own mind about its merits.
it's been ages since i played it. I will look for it in my closet this weekend and see if i can make it work. This is how i remeber it: It was the first game i played that had a believable alien world. Everything seemed alive. It had great gameplay, a good story and you actually cared. I also remeber it as having the best water and skybox i had ever seen. This is in my memory as one of the best games i have ever experienced. Unfortunately i have no idea how it holds up. (on a proud side note: i'm from belgium, living in the netherlands, and outcast was made by a belgian developer)
Some eight years ago I had a big argument with someone who claimed Outcast looked like shit after just three years. I told him he was an idiot: Outcast STILL Looks great. How many games at the time had such beautiful settings not to mention the water was brilliant. The rippling when you swam around ...
But yes, it's a great game which sadly enough had some weird issues over the years to get it to run correctly. If they had programmed a way to run it at higher resolutions, it would have solved so many things.
i also remeber that the belgian company went under while they where developing Outcast 2 and they had already playable levels i think...

Are you thinking what I'm thinking...the mother load of all bonus material.

I would love to play it in at least 1280x720, but that's a work for modders and fans I think.
Remember that it was unplayable in a lot of PCs back in the day because it was CPU intensive, the Crysis of those years regarding CPU.
Then imagine If you played it in 1024x768 in 1999, it would run at 2fps. :p

Almost impossible to get the sequel material, IMO.
Look out for the "Open Outcast" mod.

Outcast, change my life in 1999.
Hello from Spain! & Congratulation because You have got an excellente service thanks to GOG.com!
My name is Joan Morci, here CutterSlade23. I´m webmaster of OUTCAST-Spain. A spanish site dedicated enterily to 'Outcast':
http://www.outcast-spain.ya.st
I had read all the messages of this post :D.
I believe that ' Outcast ' has exclusive graphs, with which the time don´t pass for them.
When I finished the game in 1999, paint a picture ... in fact it is the only picture that I have painted in my life. This picture is on my website.
I sum up ' Outcast ' in a cover that I did for the 10th anniversary of the edition DVD-Rom (and that I allowed to see in January 2010, to GOG.com in Facebook :D ). I show it like attached file.
But... For the persons that ' Outcast ' doesn´t know and only they heard to speak about it...Read these brief lines:
Outcast was and it is, a game with an artificial intelligence over the average, better than a lot of games of today. For example:
- You want to know thist where a place, so you ask to any 'talan' (native). If it is far, He will say to you where he saw it for last time. If this near, He will indicate it to you with the arm.
- Do you want to be a villain? You it can be. But be careful there are important personages in the game that if you kill them, finishes your adventure.
- You can buy a twon-ha, but in Motazaar somebody it can give it to you with the most advanced adventure.
- And many more surprises, neither that nor I himself knew till not long ago time... Which? Outcast has 2nd one end, which you will discover if you pass the game to 100 %.
Greetings from OUTCAST-Spain! ;)

I have to be honest..It just looks like a generic shooter with some town segments thrown in. Just being honest.

Ralackk: A couple of those youtube videos showed a first person perspective can you move about and play in that mode or is it just a static aiming thing?

I just tried the demo and it seemed like I could do everything in first person mode (running, strafing, shooting, swimming, etc.) The only time it forced me into 3rd person perspective was during conversations. The first person movement felt pretty solid too, not the 'tacked-on' feeling you sometimes get in games that allow both perspectives. There are a few control idiosyncrasies compared to a typical FPS (you need to hold down a key to aim and you can't jump and shoot at the same time) but the combat was a lot better than I expected.
I'm now really looking forward to buying this next week! (along with everyone else, it sounds like...)
(FYI: I was only able to get the demo running on an old Win98 machine.)
I tried it a while ago but I couldn't get past the bit near the start where you have to show that you know how to sneak. The part you need to complete to get any further in the game. How do I get past that bit. A nice walkthrough/hint guide would be nice as extras unless it's just me who had that problem. :)

Teflon.Djinn: That all really depends, I think, on how reliable the release is. There are a number of issues with the retail release that prevent proper playing of the game on systems we use today. If GOG did their standard fantastic job in getting the game running smoothly on modern computers? I expect a full-bore rush on their servers as everyone floods the tubes to purchase and download it.
If the gamebreakers are still in the game to an inconvenient degree (See: Interstate `76 release), then maybe not so much.

I really hope for GoG's sake this doesn't turn into another Interstate 76 problem... I'm looking forward to Outcast, but hearing about how it has so many problems (similar to I76) makes me weary about being a day 1 instant purchaser (as I did with I76 and got burned).
I guess I'll wait a few days and see if anyone has any problems with it.
