I am looking into getting an offshore proxy. Does gog have any issue with me ordering products (with the understandable exception of Witcher 2) behind one? Or has anyone have any problems ordering behind one? I know Steam is a big no-no, so I want to check if gog has similar issues. Even if I doubt it, I prefer to double check just to be safe.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for proxies? Preferably one that isn't likely to bend over to my (rogue) government and does minimum logging :/

What you're reading about is the proposal of legislation that goes along those lines. A draft of a bill probably only has a few lines written. Then it has a few months, maybe years, of legislative process to go through. Even if it does happen, it won't be until the end of this Parliament. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be worried about it, but in no way should you be saying that our problems are any bigger. CISPA is much further into the legislative process than our version of it is.

My main concern was actually with the RIAA/MPAA + ISP marriage, not necessarily that bill atm. Although, it is a concern especially since there are several other bills floating around in Congress trying to monitor people's use of the internet. If it isn't about "national security" then it is about "protecting the children"

edit: although, thankfully that bill doesn't seem to be making progress. That bill won't do much to stop child porn, it is the equivilent of looking through random people's houses just to be sure they are doing nothing wrong.

You say this, but there's an alarming urgency to their actions. For example the phrase along the lines of "as soon as parliamentry process will allow" suggest that this is on the fast track. It's not like it's new after all, they just have to dust off Labours IMP document and put a new header on it.

It's set to be announced in the queens speech, that's what is expected of parliament within the year. So I fully expect this to be law before 2012 is out.

Oh, yeah, of course. But 'fast-track' only means that it'll be read before the Banana Curvature Matrix Bill. If you're lucky enough to have a non-Con MP you should really be contacting them to make sure they attend the reading to vote no to further progression, usually only about 5 MPs attend the first reading of any bill.

But seriously. For the next 1-2 years there's nothing to worry about concerning these plans, just stay on the ball and keep pestering your MP if you really do care about it. I'd pester mine but he's a jibbering wreck after his fling with an apparent Russian spy. Shame. He was the chosen one...

Let's hope that on both sides of the lake that dithering government incompetency wins the day with delays and derailing.

I wasn't intending for this topic to be primarily about government/ISP internet monitoring, just whether or not it is kosher to order stuff here behind a proxy and any recommendations which proxies to use. The articles that I linked to were just to back up my claims and reasonings behind using one in my OP. I like to show my sources.

You'll have no problem with the banks I think, and I very much doubt GOG will care, I think your problem will be if you're going via PayPal, who are smarter, and more specifically motivated than banks.

As for who to use, what result are you hoping to achieve. Not being traceable, or not being actively traced?

thanks for the straight answer guys. My primary motive is to give my ISP the middle finger for going along with this, but I am also concerned with just how much information ad companies are gathering on people. Even if I know privacy doesn't exist on the internet, I want to make things as hard as possible for these companies to track me. For this reason, I don't want or have a social networking account because I don't want to be a product, I prefer to be another face in the back of the crowd.
@wpegg For the moment I'm more interested in not being actively traced although preferably both. Esepecially, not by my ISP. If you have any information about vpns or proxies I would like to hear it. Feel free to pm me.
