precipitate8: It's nice that they are sending some profit the way of the developer. I think it's important to remember, though, that the transaction fee is the least of steam's profit here. Anytime you add money to the wallet, steam has your cash. So if people add money to the wallet to buy cards, which transfers it to another wallet, steam still owns it. Depending on how people use the wallet money determines their profit margin. I bet they make a lot more from increased game sales from card buyers increasing overall wallet values than the transaction fees.

Thanks for all the opinions. This is obviously a 'not for me' thing, but hope those for who it is, enjoys it. Just don't blow your rent money on a virtual number :)
I have $15 in my Steam Wallet right now, and I did not spend $0.01 real money to get it.

If you already have games which drop Steam cards, how would it be a "not for you thing" to get those cards and sell them on the market for free Steam Wallet money? Unless of course you don't have a Steam account :)

Momo1991: Well I've given a bunch away but recently decided to try and collect Faerie Solitaire - just to see what the heck you get for completing a badge.
Faerie Solitaire is a good choice! :D

They are one of the cheaper priced sets, 2nd to Team Fortress 2 if you have to buy them through the market.

Cool! I think I'll wait to see if I get a booster pack first before investing any money - seems a bit insane to buy them ;-)

Punished_Snake: Trading card is usefull, I made 13€ by selling those stupid cards :D
Yep, that's about all it's useful for :)

Blocks that Matter is easier, because they're both really cheap AND only 6 cards. That's the one badge I crafted.

And Super Meat Boy is only 5 cards.

Well I don't have either of those games :-( Frankly I just gave a bunch of cards away and this is sort of a whim.

My thinking is that this whole thing is a way for Steam to encourage people, that are into collecting, to buy games from them - and not another source like GOG or Amazon or etc... I even said as much about the Amazon bundles - they won't sell as well as they might have if they don't include Steam codes for those games -especially games that participate in TC's. I think GOG is going to feel a loss of revenue as well for those games that are in both stores.

I expect the gap between DRM/non-DRM will only widen with this trading card system and I'm not sure I like where this is headed...

I have $8 from my card drops. But I'd gladly have traded that 8 bucks for a fun level up system that reflected your activity and accomplishments in PC games, that everyone could participate in without needing to purchase stuff other than games. I think this also would have had broader appeal and been better in the long run for steam loyalty. And I feel a little exploity selling this stuff to other people when I feel like they have no value; but I keep being reminded that I don't get to decide what other people feel is valuable. So, now that I have no card drops left, there's not much for me to participate in the system (I'm under level 10 so my booster drop chance is looooow). Who knows, when the system goes live and all the cards are 5 cents a piece, maybe I'll make a badge, but mostly 'meh'. So, 'not for me' means I'm not really interested in leveling up with the current system, just exploiting it a bit and then ignoring it.

my point -> Leveling up earns you non-tradable items like profile showcases, extra friends list slots, and more

WTF? Is that limited now? or was it limited to begin with? Has valve gone bonkers?

Was limited to 200, +50 for linking Facebook, and now + per level.

New profile design is nice. I don't care that much but it's nice. Annoying I don't have any cards despite having a ton of time in games like Meat Boy, but whatever, don't care really.

I was surprised to see I only had a "6 year service" badge. That would be 2007 but I know I played Half Life 2 the day it came out. Weird.

I have 8 years of service myself, and I never used it until last year. But I did attempt to play HL2 back in the day, I suppose...

Now that I think about it I am pretty sure I started a new account when The Orange Box came out, for some reason. My old account with just Half Life 2 on it must be floating out there in the ether somewhere.

hey, now you can try restoring the pw for that account, and you get a shiny experience badge! then you only need to transfer your games there to... oh wait

oh?

how come you didn't play it properly?

its weird how you don't need to play games to get cards. i left portal 2 running and half an hour later i got a card. it was running in background when i was out shopping.
