Kongregate does/did this. Some years ago they made the TCG game Kongai, where the cards has to be won by getting achievements in the other games they host.
How did that go, is it still active?
(I did not play it as it is MP)

That actually makes sense to me, though. Getting cards by 'doing something' in game. On the steam beta, I've gotten about 8 bucks by selling cards I've received from launching the game to the menu screen and going to bed. It just seems kind of insipid to me.

Personally I find the whole mess to be quite silly. They are really pandering to the crowd that is obsessed with achievements and status, trying to sell them on yet another system that is entirely pointless and has no value whatsoever. I could understand if there were some added benefit, like a small discount on games at higher levels or access to special things, but this has none of that. I also find it silly that you have to go through this hassle for simple things such as emoticons or backgrounds for a profile.
I can't complain though, despite how silly I find it. Just short of $50 made from selling these things to everyone else with games I already owned from indie bundles or elsewhere.

I think you do potentially get coupons from crafting badges. Probably not worth as much just selling the cards though. I agree, I just can't believe how many people buy in to this sort of thing.I can't complain though, despite how silly I find it. Pheace: That's not completely true considering you get discount coupons crafting badges. Perhaps not the higher level thing, but it is a result of the cards.
I wasn't very clear, but I was referencing something along the lines of a permanent discount the higher you level your account (not much though, 5% total or something). Otherwise, what is the point of bothering, since nobody else really cares what your level or badges are to start with? Maybe I am hanging out with the wrong people though, but I certainly cannot think of a single person in real life, or my online gaming buddies, that is rushing to check out my level and stare in awe. Not sure if it comes across this way, but I am not complaining about all this, just that I find it incredibly silly. To each their own though of course. Cards are moving fast enough to show people will certainly buy into anything and find a way to enjoy it.

Honestly I don't see the downside to this.
Valve gets more money, Devs / Publishers get more money, people like me get more money by selling cards they find, and people who actually care about the cards and badges and levels get that too.
I did actually just give in and craft my first badge - cost me $1.60 including opportunity cost of cards i could've sold instead, but at least now I have that out of my system.

Lol, if you're only getting one badge that one certainly seems to have the appropriate name for it xD

Do you think devs get a cut? I suspect, only if this makes people buy more of their games. In fact, I was guessing that valve was looking for a way to further monetize games without having to cut in developers/publishers. Who, knows, maybe they cut them a share. I feel like instead of 'innovative community building' we got 'innovative monetization of community building'. Valve gets more money, Devs / Publishers get more money, people like me get more money by selling cards they find, and people who actually care about the cards and badges and levels get that too.

For me, the downside is that they could have designed a system that was a lot more fun than this (yes, I get that fun is subjective). I was hoping it was something that would keeping me coming back to steam rather then something I'll just ignore. But you're right in that no gamers were harmed in the making of this card game.

Thanks everybody for all the info this thread has about that Steam cards thingy. I was interested but too lazy to research online. I didn't know how cards "dropped" after the initial half of the set. If it HAS to be traded or worse, bought to be completed, then it has no interest to me.
Sure, I'm happy some people can get some money out of it, but it's simply not for me. If only dropping cards had to do with actually doing something in the games, yes, that would be fun. But as it is now, that's just something I won't care about.
