Sure, Big N and the others are just seeking new ways for money making.
In the end its the same like they do with their DLC. Years ago they were part of the
game. Now during the programing those extra missions etc. are already in the pipe.
Back to the videos. I think that they could have stopped them long ago.
But than it was their strategy to support (even not saying against them is silent support)
them. Now LetsPlay is a way of making money for some of them.
And like any other business they should have checked their risks.
For the normal maker of a video nothing changed.

Darvond: So you miss out on games you couldn't otherwise own or obtain legally? Or games so bafflingly obscure, you didn't know they existed until some source brought them to attention?
avatar
TwilightBard: I own Chrono Trigger. I own it more than once. I do not have the time to replay it 7 times. I beat it once. I simply want to see the other endings.

Honestly, I think that's what you mean, cause I don't get it.
What I meant was missing out on titles I would have never heard of had it not been for Let's Play, such as Terranigma being namedropped in a video, or versions of games I never have guessed to exist such as a Turbografix version of Hatris.
Never really understood people who make money from recorded gameplays, but on the other hand I do like watching Let's Plays, so...

Hmmm... Never considered watching an LP to be a replacement for actually playing the game; in fact, I've discovered quite a few games this way that I later bought or consider buying. Including the one game that, in a way, saved my life, and that LP was found by sheer coincidence. I might use an LP as a guide, or to determine whether I'll be able to play a particular game at all (because I'm ridiculously bad at anything action-based), but never as a replacement.

Though, to be honest, most LPs I watch are of games that I've already finished, because it's interesting to see how other people come up with solutions to various problems; also - a chance to discover something I might've missed during my own playthrough.
Um.

I thought Youtube video producers couldn't make money off Let's Plays. Because that's what Youtube's rules say when you try to become a partner - you can't make money if you don't own the full copyright to whatever you're doing. Hell, it's the reason why I never let them monetize some of my videos which have dozens of thousands of views.

And now people are complaining about it?

Seriously?

I've thought about making review videos but would prefer it if companies made a bit of money off my videos since I'm using their materials. I have no problem with that. But you can't do that on Youtube, the damn site just blocks the videos without asking a thing.

I'll drop this hard question into your lap.

What about someone who makes a living off lets play, but is also clearly benefiting the community at large?

It isn't complaint, its clearly a debate I'm seeing here. Sure, I might be here to BBQ Nintendo the moment they make things worse, but that's me. I'm also wanting the views of others.

I don't mean that people here are complaining. I meant in general, not in this thread. My apologies.

Apologies accepted. I've noticed it off on Neogaf, where its quite the fustercluck.
This Content ID stuff is complex and mysterious thing. I'm not making money from Nintendo walkthroughs, but this still looks like bad news - a video with a Content ID match and advertisement doesn't look bad, but I think many videos like that may result in account status being "Not in Good Standing" under Content ID section, and the ability to upload videos longer than 15 minutes will be removed. I don't want that.

TL;DR - You can place the ads, but I want 15min+ videos, even if I could have hundreds of videos with content from your games uploaded into my YouTube account.

Or worse, this could result in people like Chuggaconroy losing the greater part of their income. Entire networks could get into hot water, and entire networks will complain, even if formally, I feel.

Unless Nintendo will start removing the videos and giving copyright strikes (but they don't have such plans), I'm not worried about that.

I don't think many people would be happy to lose their main income. Nor would their fanbases.
Good on them. It's their intellectual property, and most LPs do not have enough editing or production to even justify them being paid for it.

I don't like LPs being monetized to begin with.

If the LPer is using the LPs as their main source of income there is something wrong there. And this comes from someone who has been doing LPs for years now.

So you're implying that all of the TGS guys and gals are in the wrong?

Yes. For the most part.
avatar
TwilightBard: I do however, dislike the idea that a Let's Play uploader could make money off of these games. It's like a bit messed up in my eyes, but I feel like I'm in a minority about this.
avatar
Wishbone: Do you also dislike the idea that a musician could make money by playing on a guitar he didn't build himself?

No, it's not a perfect analogy, but my point is that they are not making money off the games but off the videos, which they do make themselves.
Ok... to fix this analogy we're going to have to change some things. The game is not the instrument, the computer/console is the instrument. The game is the song.

Now, if someone was making loads of money covering other people's songs and not giving any money to the people who wrote the songs, don't you think that's a bit unfair?
