Anyway, no mentions of first System Shock? It was as open-world for a space station as you can possibly get - all floors were usually pretty big, and full of secrets and fantastic spots to discover.
Would you count Spindizzy and Bobby Bearing?
They both had pretty big world to explore in your own way, albeit with annoying time limits...

DeadPoolX: You could play as either the T-800 or Kyle Reese in the main game. There was also an option to play without an opponent. That way you could just screw around and do whatever you wanted.

Fenixp: Who in the right mind would choose to play a massive escort mission as opposed to play as ... Well ... Killing machine
I guess someone who's either masochistic or wanted to take on a challenge. No idea, really. I never played as Reese; in fact, most of the time I played as the T-800 without an opponent, so I could basically go anywhere and do anything I wanted.
On this topic, yesterday I was speaking to my young cousin (12 years old) who was going on about skyrim this and skyrim that. Then he said that he loved open world games and that they were only a fairly new style of game...

I proceeded to mention many of the games on this thread which he had of course not heard of. Then I said, what about the older elder scrolls games? "I only know Oblivion and skyrim. I know there are supposed to be a 1, 2 and 3" He didn't even know about morrowind!

I wanted to further enlighten him to some (not so old) gaming history, showing him fallout (he'd played alot of fallout 3) and arcanum. His face was blank, "Yeah I don't really like turn based games. I prefer first person games."

Sigh. Does he have any hope? Does anyone know any young person who is interested in the gaming classics?

To be perfectly honest, those old games didn't use the top-down view because it was better, but because of technical limitations. I also prefer 1st person view, due to bigger immersion.

I favourite games of all time are the RoA series. But would I still love them that much if I tryed them today for the first time?

Well you can show him Morrowind with graphics overhaul, you know :D I wouldn't show him daggerfall, that's for sure :D

Still, you can't expect kids to like games with archaic graphics. They'll like classics, don't worry - many of what we play today will become classics in years to come. And in 20 years, they'll be sitting in your place, showing their kids Skyrim and complain how kids these days don't play classics.
