Anyone tried OpenTTD in single player?

I've read somewhere that you need to get separate AI files to get the computer to actually be able to play. Is this right? And if so, doesn't it sort of make the game easy if you know how the computer is trying to play? If this is the case, does anyone have any suggestions for AI files to use to make single player decent?

Load OpenTTD on a PC connected to the internet, use the in-game download menu and get a few different AI packages (they get stored in OpenTTD's my documents folder). AIs have basic descriptions of what they do, but it doesn't mean you'll know exactly where and what they will build. Some are designed to provide challenge, others just build nice road networks - read the descriptions and pick the ones that sound interesting.

You can download AI from the main menu, some are quite OK... although AI in TTD games was earlier always terrible, I didn't have a problem with playing without any competition.

In OTTDs main menu, there's a 'Check online content' option which has a repository of all the AIs anyone's made, which can be downloaded then and there. I suppose I would recommend AIAI, AdmiralAI, CluelessPlus and NoCab.

Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe, if you don't still know what it is - google it, and download it. It's not illegal since the whole game is remade by users, including engine, content etc. - it doesn't use any of resources of the older incarnation.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give a few of the AIs a try then. I'm guessing that you can have multiple AIs installed so that you don't know immediately which AI type you are up against?

You can set AI type in the slot to random.

Mind, an AI might crash. They game should go on but you'll get an error screen. It will offer you to restart the AI in question: it will lose all it's property and enter the game as a new player.

I've been looking at this a while trying to decide if to get it so.. is it actually any good?
