Good news from my point of view (if you pardon the pun!), that the top-down "baldur's gate" camera is definitely going to be present (I was worried for a moment).
Bad news (perhaps) if you're planning on buying this for a console, as you'll have more restricted camera options. Something to do with requiring a mouse, but I was under the impression it was possible to have a mouse with an xbox or ps3...

No one in their right mind would buy this for a console anyways. It's a Bioware RPG with a PC Toolkit.

Well, coming from a guy who got many more WEEKS of play time out of downloadable Neverwinter Nights modules than from the actual campaign, I think mods would be fantastic.
It's a Dungeons & Dragons-esque RPG system, right? Such things are MADE for aspiring Dungeon Masters to play with and create new stories...
That said, I think it's a bit odd that the consoles don't get a top-down perspective. It makes me wonder how the interface was designed to make that possible...

My guess is that they decided to pull it out to keep it from being labeled as "one of those old computer RPG games".
By forcing you more into an action use view, they're probably hoping to grab your more typical console gamer. Same reason for the marketing campaign they started with. People saw the game, got scared that it was too "Hard Core RPG" and wanted to market it differently.
In the end, they are a business and will do what they can to insure the continuation of the business.

Sure they can, just need a modded console and a bit of know how to be able to reburn the disc properly. At least that's how I remember people doing it on Morrowind. ^_^

Burning discs would require a PC. So why not just play the game on that? Seems a bit mad to invalidate your warranty just so you can play the game at a lower resolution and be restricted to a controller.

While this is true, the only game I know of that supports this is Unreal Tournament III (and even then maybe only for the editor, I'm not sure). Sony doesn't want mouse-and-keyboard play on the PS3 because of balance issues and this has affected single-player games too.

There's no top down on consoles because of some technical reason. I can't remember the explanation offhand, but I think it has something to do with the controller.
As for mods, the toolset is only on the PC version, but BioWare is hoping/planning to try to arrange it so the consoles can download community-made content as well.

I don't really know if I agree. Granted, the 360 cost less than 600$ back in 2005, and you would most likely have needed 2-3 times that to build a roughly equivalent gaming machine with wireless gaming peripherals & everything. At least if you were building it completely from scratch.
But.. You'd still have a slightly faster machine that could be upgraded to be way, way nicer today for next to nothing. You wouldn't have to suffer all the massive limitations that fixed hardware, lack of peripherals, lack of 3rd party apps and any kind of usable OS & so on, impose (with a vengeance). And perhaps most importantly, you'd be buying every game at somewhere between a 20-90% discount.
Point is, at least at the time, going console looked like about as good an idea as pissing one's pants to keep warm. It might seem tempting in the very short term, but over a period of a couple of years it looked like the poorer & more expensive solution.
The poorer bit is debatable, of course, given all the exclusives. But I doubt that's something most people could have guessed back then.
