The few politicians that I have ever respected are the ones that represented their perspectives in their campaigns and then followed through with those positions and convictions regardless of what their party wanted them to do. Making promises, representing yourself honestly, and sticking to your promises and convictions? Again, I don't know how that is in other countries, but here in the U.S., it's *extremely* rare. Thus, my stated general opinion.

As to the OP, this is a most disturbing development. Not merely that few scientists identify as Republican, but that the GOP has so severely damaged the conservative brand that scientists can no longer even identify as conservatives. This US political farce is becoming unsustainable and dangerous.
Apparently, Luisfius thinks that heavy regulations are wonderful and that people just suck at enforcing them while ignoring that many of the people who supported them included cronies of big time politicians and bureaucrats. Also, many regulations are enforced in archaic ways which is why meat producers sometimes send inspectors to grocery stores to help ensure that their products are sold in a safe manner or why some grocery store send inspectors to meat packing plants.

In short: You're arguing something that didn't need debating in the first place. People have different opinions. I have mine. You have yours. Others have theirs.
