Now, I've heard of this before, but I haven't really looked into it as I've always been primarily a PC gamer. And I realize I could just google it and look around for answers, so regard this as a laziness post and and let it sink to the depths of the forum if you don't feel like wasting your time answering. It's just so much more convenient to read a condensed info piece here.

Anyway, my question is the following: How does it compare? Is it account based? I'm specially interested on portability: Do I have the same account on my PS3 and PSP? I hear PSP can run PS1 games, which (also hearsay) are also for sale on PS3's PSN. Would I have to buy it twice to be able to play on both places? Because that would be damn convenient. I recall my wii being able to purchase GameCube games online; if I buy some would they be available on the new WiiU?

Stuff like this.

Half a dozen thank yous in advance, will add more if needed.

Edit: I was going to reply to my own topic because this "favourite topics" thingy blindsided me, but whatever. Just noting my surprise down for posterity.

It is the same account for PS3, PSP and Vita.

You can install on one PS3 and one handheld when you buy something. I had Medieval installed on my PS3 and also PSP at one point without issues as an example.

Say you changed your PSP for a Vita you have to deactivate the PSP downloaded game to activate it on your new system

Glitches can happen occasionally but if you give Sony support a call they help you no end and sort things out quickly for you over the phone. I am onto 3rd PS3 and they deactivated the old systems I had so I could download and play my bought games from PSN.

Thanks!

I'm happy to see it works cross-platform. It even gives me the feeling that, when (if) a PS4 comes out, I would still keep the games on my account. That makes it a lot more attractive, because these days all my PS2 retail games are worth essentially shit to me as I can't play them at all.

Not GameCube games, but every other previous home console, yes.

Nintendo are a bit of an odd case. In theory, your purchases are tied to the machine, not to an account - That's true for Wii, DSi and 3DS purchases. I believe that with the WiiU they are going over to an account based system, but I don't own one yet, so don't quote me on it. The account is also tied to the machine it is created on, so it's all a clusterfuck.
There is some way to transfer purchases on the Wii to WiiU, but I'm not sure if that goes only for Virtual Console games, or all online purchases. I also don't know the details of how it is done. Again, I don't have a WiiU yet, so I havne't really looked into it.

So, moral of the story: Nintendo, get your act together!
You do have PS2 classics getting gradually released now on PSN, few that stand out but nothing spectacular as of yet. Waiting on Silent Hill 2 but with the HD collection released a little while ago I think I'm going to be waiting a while!

When you look on PSN (you can browse and buy via the web store also) it tells you what games are compatible with the different systems. There are a few that are PS3 only (Gauntlet 2 is PS3 only for example) and there are a few handheld only games, it does tell you on the product page.

Be wary of the Nintendo store. I've had issues with them previously. Long story short, their download system works on the console I.D. I bought a few C64 & N64 games. Wii died, took it back to Argos and got a replacement. Signed into new console and my games weren't showing as already purchased. Contacted Nintendo and they couldn't deactivate on the old system and re activate on my new system. So when I log in to my account on PC I can see my purchases but have no way of accessing them. Lesson learnt there, they require all the stuff off the label of the original console and then they will do it. There is also a big thing with the stuff on the WiiU, they are recharging for already owned games from the Virtual Console, its a reduced amount but you have to pay for them again. There was an article on Eurogamer this morning about it :

I will never buy anything from Nintendo Virtual Console ever again after the poor experience previously, Sony and Microsoft have been really good though, they do everything they can to help you.
Thanks for all the info. This should prove to come in handy.

That's a pity as the virtual console has some of the best classic games... I'll probably wait until i get a Wii U to buy any more virtual console games.
Indeed. I was seriously considering to get Super Mario World. Now I probably won't.
