how much of this sounds applicable?

Fascism /ˈfæʃɪzəm/ is a form of radical authoritarian nationalism that came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe. Fascists seek to unify their nation through a totalitarian state that promotes the mass mobilization of the national community, relying on a vanguard party to initiate a revolution to organize the nation on fascist principles. Hostile to liberal democracy, socialism, and communism, fascist movements share certain common features, including the veneration of the state, a devotion to a strong leader, and an emphasis on ultranationalism and militarism. Fascism views political violence, war, and imperialism as a means to achieve national rejuvenation and asserts that stronger nations have the right to obtain land and resources by displacing weaker nations.

Fascist ideology consistently invokes the primacy of the state. Leaders such as Benito Mussolini in Italy and Adolf Hitler in Germany embodied the state and claimed indisputable power. Fascism borrowed theories and terminology from socialism but applied them to what it saw as the more significant conflict between nations and races rather than to class conflict, and focused on ending the divisions between classes within the nation. It advocates a mixed economy, with the principal goal of achieving autarky to secure national self-sufficiency and independence through protectionist and interventionist economic policies. Fascism supports what is sometimes called a Third Position between capitalism and Marxist socialism. Fascist movements emphasize a belligerent, virulent form of nationalism (chauvinism) and a distrust of foreigners (xenophobia), the latter closely linked to the ethnocentrism of many fascist movements. The typical fascist state also embraced militarism, a belief in the rigors and virtues of military life as an individual and national ideal, meaning much of public life was organized along military lines and an emphasis put on uniforms, parades, and monumental architecture.

*shrug* the other day I was looking around for something new to call steam fanbois and punched Fascists into google because fanbois and fascists kinda rimes but I honestly didn't know many details about it and wanted to make sure that I was using it correctly.

I was all "holy shitballs!" when I read the description because so much of it perfectly fits the "Steam is best, Steam is the savior of PC gaming, Steam must not be challenged, Steam must rule alone; if you are not of Steam I will kill you!" behavior.
I saw a Steam fanboy the other day, horrible creatures.

It sounds just as applicable as for goG fanbois and the fervent subscribers of the "DRM Free movement" *shrug*

Nice troll bait, by the way.

It's not fascism when you're doing it for a good cause comrade. Now be a good lad and hand me that shovel with some coal while I put this Steam fanboy in the incinerator.

Wow, there is nothing like being an asshole. Sogi-Ya you should probably learn to grow up. The "fanboys" won't hurt you.
I have bad experiences with Steam cultists too, but comparing them to fascists is going WAY overboard and makes you no better than they are.

Well, it's your own fault, it's not like they ever leave their parents' basement.

This is how it starts, people compare fascists with the most extreme examples as a way of writing it off. Then as things get slightly more extreme that gets written off because it's basically the same as it has been for years.

Or do you honestly believe that the Nazis weren't fascists until they started the Holocaust?

If they meet the requirements of the definition, then it's perfectly appropriate to use the term to refer to them.

One of the real problems is that you can't call anybody a fascist anymore, no matter how closely they conform to the definition because it might hurt somebody's feelings.

Yes, referring to Steam fanbois as fascists is probably a bit overwrought, but ultimately, they are corporatists looking to lock down games so that only new copies can be purchased from Steam, so it's not completely unreasonable to compare them with fascists.

I expected better from you.

For the record -- I have studied history. I have a copy of The Fascist Virus (excellent free ebook) open in front of me. I know someone who worked in International Relations.

I expected better from you, hedwards.

I tend to think of the Anti-DRM crowd as Anarchists, which is pretty much the exact inverse of Fascists considering that all it takes is changing "all must be one, or I will kill you" into "all must be none, or I will kill you" to go back and forth between the two.

the problem with the Steam fanboys (and you can like Steam, but not be included in that description) is not that they like Steam, it is that they will attack anything that isn't Steam.

Steam <-> Origin <-> uPlay .... the only thing you really loose going between them is your friends list, yet the Steam fanboys attack the other two on simple principle that they are not Steam.

Typically with horseshit logic like "EA is bad, that is why Origin will possess your PC to rape your puppy" and quoting "facts" from sources with personal interest promoting Steam (like RPS), and none of them can give a detailed account on the sexual position used in said puppy rape, because they have not actually tried using it themselves.

While I do have my own personal experiences with Steam pissing me off / causing problems on my PC, the true reason I am (virtually) violently against Steam is because after getting pissed off at it and trying to look for ways to PC game without it, I found there is / was none.

more than I am "anti steam" I am "anti monopoly" ... there should never be no choice, and Steam is a Monopoly and I support anything that puts a crack in it; be it anti-DRM, Origin, uPlay, Battlenet, or (RIP) Impulse.

If Origin had as much control on the market as Steam does, I would be pro Steam.

If there was one government controlling the world, I would be an anarchist; if there was no government at all I would be trying to start (more than) one.
