The "Classic" tag is true if original release date is 10+ years before GOG's release date. I use the dates provided in the gamecards, so it is possible that they are incorrect.

Well, pretty much all new or semi-new release thread have the obligatory "Why does GOG release games that can be bought anywhere else as well?" messages.

In the case of the OP, to me he seemed to complain again when Wargame was released here, and in the later message he mentioned that he already bought it from Steam. I took that as to mean that he is against GOG releasing Wargame because he had already bought it from Steam.

Heck, if we go that way, then GOG should not try to pursue old LucasArts classics nor the old Microprose UFO/X-Com games, as Steam and/or GamersGate are already providing them.

So you don't understand why people complain about the alleged lack of classic game releases?

When someone says that GOG should not release certain kind of games that e.g. I want to see here, certainly I will react to it, just to let him (and GOG) know that there are people who feel differently. If releasing new or semi-new games really was such a stupid idea that destroys GOG, then I presume GOG will certainly stop releasing them soon. They have the exact sales data on how certain kinds of games sell, compared to how much money and effort it takes to bring them to GOG in the first place.

To me it would be similar if a bunch of people would loudly complain every time GOG releases a strategy or adventure game, and say GOG should stop releasing them because they personally wish to see different kinds of games on GOG. I presume people who like those kinds of games would react to such message.

You mean like Baldur's Gate 2 Complete which was released September 24th, 2000 or like Icewind Dale 2 Complete which was released October 16th, 2002? What about Psychonauts from 2005?

As I said, the tag classic is used for the 10+ games, be they good or bad. I could just call them "10+ years old" but it doesn't sound as good.

Not sure about BG2, but when I think about say Neverwinter Nights, ToEE, Morrowind, I don't think classic, I think new-ish.

No objections there. As I said, the criteria I use in the spreadsheet for classic is if GOG released it 10+ years after it came out. So, for NWN, with GOG releasing it 5 years after it came out, it doesn't count as classic. ToEE was released 7 years after it came out, so it's not counted as classic either. As for Morrowind, if it's released here (the GotY Edition) before October 31, it won't count as classic, if it's released later it will be counted as one.

I too want to see more old games released on GOG, a lot more. That being said I under the impression that most old games don't sell very good and they are mostly aimed at a stagnant or dwelling market (the gamers who played those games in their youth). Don't get me wrong, I am part of that market but that's my impression.

The way I see it, the new releases on GOG are vital for GOG's long term survival and growth. So even if I don't care that much about them I'm certainly not against them nor do I protest that there are too many of them. GOG doesn't have a limit on how many games it can release per month so it's not like the new releases take the spot of old ones. Also, if the new releases prove successful, they will help grow the DRM free market( which I also believe is struggling to survive outside indie games and abandonware) and provide more funds and negotiation power for GOG to release more old games.

I'd love to see GOG"s sales numbers but there's a snow ball's chance in hell they'll ever release them.

It's weird, I'm looking at the New & Coming tab and there isn't ONE good Old game there. The oldest one is just barely two weeks over 5 years old, which in my book isn't really old in any shape or form.

I don't really mind the new games and realize that it must be tough to keep adding stuff to the site when you realistically just can't get all the old games here. Maybe they've pretty much got everything they can at this point. Now they're just adding new games to Good Old Games dot com.

I'm not so much complaining as the subtle irony just entertains me. :D

I don't mind people expressing an opinion, thats the point of the forums. And making a thread to express opinions is I think the best way to go. But I have to admit it is a bit annoying when I see the same posts in every single release thread. There is more "I already bought this on X", "where are the classics?", "where is linux version?" posts than posts about the game released.

Yeah, I'm glad GOG releases games regardless if they are available elsewhere. Why should they only have exclusives? I'm probably in the minority, but I don't have accounts on every single game site. I just created a Steam account last month and that was only for one game. Just last year I returned to gaming after several years on hiatus so a lot of games that people have complained about, like Amnesia, are new to me. Who doesn't already have Amnesia? Me! I never heard of the game before it appeared here. Same with Jade Empire and lots of others released in the last 10 years.

AFAIK, old releases are never listed under the New & Coming tab.

In the case of Amnesia and Penumbra Trilogy, it makes even more sense to release them on GOG considering the next Amnesia game (A Machine for Pigs) is coming to GOG too. Then the earlier games can be obtained from the same service as well, even if many people got them from some other store or bundle earlier.

Also, there seems to be some odd belief (misconception) that just because some game has been available in some time-limited Humble Bundle, that must certainly mean that everyone who could ever, now or in future, be interested in the game has obtained it in that small time window. As if all potential gamers are actively buying new games all the time. In reality it goes just like in your case, some just recently became (PC) gamers, some had a few years off from gaming for various reasons, etc.

I still have quite a big gap in PC gaming from around 2000 to, say, 2007, mainly because I didn't feel like buying much of games with Starforce 3 or whatever that retail games came with back then. I was still gaming then, but I mainly stayed with pre-2000 games. So I personally am very interested to see lots of games on GOG from that era (2000-2008, and newer). GOG is one big reason I've gotten more active in buying games.

That's because the only games that get added "coming" are ones for pre-orders - i.e. new games. Old games when they are released are released as a surprise. The new games tag only goes back a couple weeks, for which yes, only 1 old game was added in the last couple of weeks and technically it was "re-released" recently.
Not really a fair comparison, they substantially changed the gameplay in Ducktales Remastered whereas they claim not to have for Lords of Midnight.
