cowlitz14: Am I wrong to think that my games should be listed in the downloader window?
No. If it is set up correctly then when you click the white box with "Downloader mode" on either the game should automatically appear in the downloader menu with a progress bar or there will be a prompt asking you what program you want to use to open the link after which it should appear in the downloader.

The downloader doesn't install the game for you it simply downloads the setup file, though there is an option to start the setup file once the download is finished.

It may be easier to simply download the game directly, that is, without using the downloader. Once the file is downloaded you'll be able to double-click the installer and then it'll start up the setup program.

edit: Well, looks like you got it. Happy gaming!

cowlitz14: This is the sort of trouble I have with computers. A learning curve issue I suppose. I have to learn to adjust my expectations and not to make assumptions with what he programming is saying on websites. It's not always clear what the hell is going on.
Don't worry and ask. We are a friendly and helpful community :)

Certainly the best one I've seen in a while!
I too am older (60) but I've been around computers for about 40 years.
Darn things! :-)

Got it! All is well.

You are old enough to remember the early seventies when touch tone phones were just arriving. People wanted to know what the # and * buttons were and the fone comany said "they[re for personal computers which will be arriving a a couple of years". OH.... we said. Then we were told omputers were supposed to make life easier and simpler for us but it seems that really what happened is that they added more levels of complexity to our lives. Still I can deal with it. I can always turn the damned thing off and read a book. But I like video games....

cowlitz14: Thanks for all the help to everyone.... for your patience with this old timer.

FYI the reason I want games is so that, in old age, my hand/eye coordination can stay reasonably sharp.

I'm not ready for bingo at the church hall with a bunch of decrepit oldies yet...
Good for you :-)

And don't worry too much about the "old timer" thing. The average age on this forum is somewhat higher than on most gaming forums. Since GOG.com started out as Good Old Games, most of the first people here came because of games they remembered fondly from their childhood or youth, while younger gamers still after the latest big hit did not have much of an interest (with exceptions, of course).

Do you have any idea what sort of games you prefer? You might get some pretty good suggestions from people here. This is generally an extremely helpful community.

One bit of advice I'll give you is to install the games from here somewhere else besides the Program Files folder. Many of the older games may have problems with that folder due to the increased security measures Microsoft has put on it. Personally, I install all my games to C:\Games\[Name of the game]. You can change the install path by clicking the "Options" button in the individual game installers.

Well, they did both. Of course they added another skill layer, since you had to learn how to use the computer in order to do anything at all with it, but once you've learned, a lot of things do become a lot easier to do.

Actually, I recommend sticking to the downloader. If you managed to get it installed (you saw its window) then you just have to switch the GOG downloader mode button from OFF to ON on the page of the game you want to download in order to use it. Some games have multiple files and the downloader downloads them all with one click. You'd have to download each file separately if you don't use the downloader.
Hat's off to everyone here for the replies, this is why GOG kicks the shit out of other sites hands down.

On a side note, I'll be 38 in a few days and I'm starting to get called "old". I think everyone here who knows me well enough can attest that age is only a number. :D

Totally off topic here but I own a t-shirt that says:

Some of us never really grow up,
We just learn how to act in public.

That's me! :-)

Speaking of which, I should introduce you to a friend of mine. He was 42 when I first met him a few years ago and he's at least as insane as you are. He'd sometimes follow me around with an evil grin and loosen his belt. I bet you'd make a nice couple. And he certainly taught me that age and maturity are very independent variables so I wasn't too shocked when you came along. :D

38 is not old. 38 is the new 28. :)

I want to repeat Wishbone's comment about Program Files. DO NOT install any of your games there as you WILL have problems. I recommend downloading all your games to one area, so you'll always know where to look for them, and you'll quickly be able to tell if a game successfully downloaded or not. There may be a few other steps you may have to take to get some of your games working. Don't be afraid to ask here. : )
