DCS Blackshark is 66% off on steam. It's a game I've been meaning to pick up for a long time. At just over $6 it's a bargain.

In the past I would have just bought it. Now, I'm thinking "Who cares that its cheap when its trapped to that DRM!"

I am now prepared to pay 4 times the price, if necessary, to get a proper version of the game.

What is happening to me?

I don't use Steam much anymore, but it has as much to do with the humble indie bundle as with GOG: Seems like a waste to buy popular indie games individually from there when they will most likely be offered DRM-free in a bundle in future.

I sympathize. I myself have been to GOG sooner than to Steam, so when I bought Terraria some time ago from there I had no idea as to how severe Steam DRM actually was. Since then, I'm doing my best not to buy anything that has Steam attached to it unless I really can't help it.

And even then I wait for a sufficiently heavy discount.

What's nice is becoming aware how DRM can end up hurting the customer and realising that there is a different way to follow.

I have arouind 200 games on Steam, a lot of new releases require Steam. Such is life on the PC. Steam is a decent platform though, it has an offline mode so once you have your game installed then you are good to go (unless its a Ubisoft title). Their sales are also pretty darned good also, picked so much stuff up over the past 2 years from them over the Christmas period, found some decent games that I thought I would never buy and turns out that I am really enjoying them.

But I find the offline mode doesn't work all the time for me.

Also if someone is using steam on my desktop and I want to play a different game on my laptop then there are issues.

The automatic patches and cheap sales are definitely good. However after experiencing how much better it is the GOG way, (i.e. be trusted to download and use my game whereever and when ever I want) I just don't want to go back to it.

And I'm not "missing out" on the game. I am just willing to pay more for it to be an a better form.

The DRM on Steam's DCS B isn't going to hurt anybody, and the only other way to follow here is to not play it. I fail to see how this is positive, or how it isn't a proper version.

I think people here are getting carried away with their hatred of DRM and are starting to lose sight of reason...
How do you plan on doing that? The retail version has starforce proactive.

Well screw that. Screw reason. DRM should be hated. Why should I pay for a game and not be trusted to use it legally when someone else can pirate it and do whatever they want.

I won't buy it on principle even though I know it doesn't make any real difference.

There are more than enough games on GOG to last me a lifetime. And at least I know that once I've downloaded them, I'll be able to play them for a lifetime.

Well, because you are violating their EULA. That is the whole purpose of Steam. GOG is the same, they just don't enforce it.
