You have to start in Prophecies if you want to experience the "epic event" in Ascalon. If you start in any other campaign, you will not be able to go back to the specific area that I think you are referring to.

If you are willing to enlist the help of running services, you can get access to heroes in Prophecies the fastest: Start a Prophecies character, go through "epic event", then get run from Ascalon city to Lion's Arch. From there, you can do the Eye of the North event to get the Eye of the North set of three heroes OR go straight to Nightfall, and get a different set of three heroes (EOTN gives you a monk and an elementalist, and then a mesmer shortly after, Nightfall gives you a monk, a warrior, and a dervish).

I"m considering King's Bounty, but I'm afraid it will be too difficult. I don't play many of these types of games, and I seem to remember feeling extremely lost in the demo for Armored Princess. Is there a good tutorial in King's Bounty: The Legend? Or do you have to pretty much figure all the stuff out by yourself?

L4D2 has gameplay refinements but doesn't take itself very seriously
