So as you may already know, Germany had general elections.


The peculiar fact is that after the elections, albeit we have clear winners and losers yet nobody is happy.

Everyone is (at least slightly) unhappy with the results.



The black conservatives gained a lot and are the strongest party but don't have enough seats for a majority. And our ogre chancellor is renowned to be unwilling to share her power.

The yellow liberals which helped the conservatives last time were kicked out because nobody likes them anymore.

The red center trying to be a little social democrat again gained but still has to recover from the horrendous effects of the coalition between them and the conservatives had some years ago.

The small left and the green parties really want to rule but lack the spine to get anything done.

The new DM focused nationalists failed to enter the parliament by a meagre amount of votes so they failed as well while being remarkably successful for the first time, too.

So all in all nobody really is happy with the results.
Some are happy that the liberals have been kicked out, but since there is talk about snap elections they fear the liberal zombie apocalypse resurrected.


So while I'm happy to see our politicians finally fight for well, something -
I wonder if you had any experience where elections or voting results made everyone unhappy.

Well... elections here tend to be like that. The winners are cheaters and the losers are spoiled sports. :-p

I found the political map of Germany very.... "uniform". All black ( nice choice of a colour by the way...) , With a tiny bit of purple in the eastern part of Berlin and some spots of red on the Northwest. I almost hear someone saying "Clearly, the spots of red must be subdued. And that purple enclave must be surrounded with a wall )

Your Kanzlerin might not like the idea of sharing power ( if it's shared, it's not power anymore I guess ), but she obviously likes the idea of having a junior coalition partner to use as scapegoat. Being that "partner" backfired on the SPD after her first mandate, and now it backfired on the FDP after her second one. Whether it is the SPD or the Green that step into that ship, they will likely be the one that will be charged with the responsiobility for any fortcoming problem ( think : having to foot the bill for the next euro-disaster and the one(s) thereafter ) .

The true danger for her were the euroceptics. Not because they could have threatened the almighty Union's share of the chamber, but because any party seating in the chamber has the right to invoke the Constitutional Court. With what lies ahead of us, Europeans, that would have been a legal nightmare.

Anyway, Germany will need a strong majority government in the years to come. The energy supply issue is far from solved. The Euro issue is still a "template" waiting to be applied on a wider basis. German banks , if they were not German, would be considered as ticking bombs. Europeans Elections next year will be insignificant as ever by may trigger renewed tensions. That's why , as a foreigner, I'd prefer to see Germany in the hands of a CDU/CSU/SPD coalition.

Every single one of them :P. Heck, the last couple of elections has been just like the Southpark episode where they have to vote between a shit sandwich (Labor) or a giant douche (Liberals). The rest of the parties are too niche to have bucklies chance of getting in and doing anything.

And I have to guess that none of those are anything like the USA's republicans, our version of a 'christian party'.

Is it bad that as a pantheist, I wouldn't mind rallying all the christians under another ticket so the rest of us can focus on real things, or at least one less stupid factor?

One of the very few benefits of my country being divided into two clear parties is that someone's always happy, I guess. Yet honestly no one is ever really happy, because we never get anything done due to having two huge parties pretending there is no middleground.

The names of political parties in Germany are totally bullshit.

The names are just a relic, some very old and very conservative people mention their christian and god fearing values while supporting the CDU.

The Bavarian sister party called CSU = Christian Social Union is, despite its name, the largest (thus the most popular and generally accepted) right winged party in Germany, sharing some party platform elements with some Neo-faschist parties.

Same goes for the other parties, the SPD (Social Democratic Party) has lost most of it's social democratic ideology and shifted towards the (right) center while the FDP, the liberals, the free democratic party are just hated douchebags almost nobody likes anymore.

So don't take abbrevations of german parties serious. The all don't work and are just a reminder how things were 60 years ago when the Federal Repuplic of Germany was founded by the allied occupying powers. Honestly, I was expecting an American lecturing others about the benefits of a two party system, but your post turned to be far less lecturing than I feared. :-)

We are going to have an early election this October ;__;. I don't want to think about politics until the month begins.

I think regarding elections, germany has two problems:

1. Old people go and vote out of their habit, and out of same habit they vote the same. They dont know and dont care that the world went on and is way beyond the old parties can manage to handle, thy just do what they do, just because.

2. Young people dont vote, because the same old farts that ignore modern problems and go around "solving" everything with antique practices are those who get to say things anyway, politics doesnt care about the modern society, modern society does their best not to care about politics.

I hink there would be one way to battle this:
People should be required to vote, it should be a must.
Also the vote should always require a reason. I have no idea how this can be enforced without going against the right not to tell who you voted and stuf flike that, but it should be required that you can give a valid intelligent reason behind your vote other than "thats what i vote because its the same i voted last time, and my parents voted them too".

The question is who would decide what is valid or not. I mean I know people who used to vote for Christian party just because it professed Christianity and thus had to be nice guys.

Well, our voting system is a joke anyway.

People were so "Yay!" for Obama, and his legacy will be a health insurance system that punishes people who can't afford it in the first place, and causes businesses to pull every trick in the book to avoid it. Way to go.

It's just a theoretical idea anyway, politics isnt meant to be intelligent, or else it wouldnt work.
But yeah of course there would be problems like this, but even me not having one right now, i assume there can also be solutions. Anything that forces people to do something intelligent should be considered good in the long rund i think.
