For me, I think it's related to my depression issues. When I have money, I just...can't stop looking at things to buy and buying them. It used to be I'd use Ebay but that had the advantages of cool down and shipment time. Buying things gives me a temporary happiness boost followed by the inevitable "why did I buy that?" crash. Even if I don't buy anything; I think about it all the time I'm on Steam. It's like a nagging voice in the back of my brain.

These Holiday deals are like crack to me. So many deals, and I can justify any purchase by going "It's a STEAL at 50% off!" It even extends to gifting people stuff. I'll just buy people gifts just for the sake of doing so. Not because it makes them happy so much as the very act of purchasing makes me feel good.

Am I alone with this or are there anyone else mentally damaged struggling too?
I too have bought probably too many games in some sales (would have bought more but I'm not made of money) but mostly because I thought that eventually I'll play them and that hopefully is true.
Gifting others is a fine thing.

Probably better to buy loads of games than lose all in some casino or drink it all. After spending spree you have something kinda concrete even though it is in bit heaven.

And all gamers are damaged, especially me. =P

You are most definitely not alone. I've purchased more games in the last two months than I will have time to play them in the next year.

Bundles are the devil.
Hehe, I used to buy all sorts of stuff thinking I'll play them. Then one day I realized I can't afford to anymore. Now I just stick to what I have and only buy something if I think I'll play it in the immediate future, if not then I leave it, there's always gonna be another sale by the time I decide to play it.
I buy games from time to time(Or have others help me buy them until I get paid/etc.) just for the sake of collecting them(So I can have a variety of genres/themes to choose from & have something to play if i'm bored/etc, or to have a convenient installer/backup of a game I already own in some other form.). I know I may never get to them all but I think it's better to have them and (possibly) never play them than to not have a certain game and want to play it.

Yeah, it is much better situation than play some game over and over even if you sick of it. Like the time when I had Snes. Castlevania IV.. man, I whipper so many skeletons. =P

Edit.. so many typos.. well, two.

This is actually quite normal(to a certain extent). Why do you thing so many people like to go shopping. I can't remember the exact psychological background however.

On a related note, people who are depressed are more often going for "short term reward" rather then for long term investments. So this also connects somehow.

I know what you mean. Some games are quite fun to play every so often(ME series, SS 1/2, and a few others come to mind.), but you can only play a game(Even a loved one) so many times within a certain period of time before it wears a little thin.

P.S. Fixed that for ya. ;)

That's exactly what I'll try to do from now, since I have kind of the same problem than Hawk52... Last example: I bought the Total War Shogun 2 complete pack (Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai, Fall of the Samurai) even if I know I utterly SUCK at RTS...

That should be the final warning, for me. More than 100 games on GOG, more than 150 games on Steam and not much time to play... And I'm not even counting the 2-3 MMOs I'm playing!!
This seems to be a widespread phenomenon. Me, I solved it in two ways: one, buying physical copies of games drastically reduces the imagined value of digital games; two, I look at a game, see the very attractive price, and then at the checkout page, think, "Will this game still be on sale at a later date, at a much lower price? ...Yes." Then I close the window.
Kinda offtopic, but: Why is it so many(imo) GOGgers make threads then leave without replying to anyone who replies in them? 0.o

Well it's been less than an hour so let's not make some conclusions yet.

Mostly best thing in threads is to get sidetracked and talk about something else instead. =P

Edit: Also, maybe he is buying a game at the moment. ^^

I hope I didn't come off as sounding rude......just making an observation, is all. It's just something I noticed happens here sometimes. :)

Maybe, but he/she isn't the only one who's done it. I can understand a thread starter leaving immediately if something unexpected comes up which they have to attend to, but why do so "many" make a thread asking people for their own POV/opinions on a topic before logging off a few minutes later? :\

People in XXI century are really addicted to dopamine kicks. Impulsive buying, watching internet porn, or even funny sweet kittens - it all brings you dopamine.

Our brains are on constant high because of the internet. Everything is in your reach, you can watch 10 different things per minute.

Because of the internet, our brains require more and more such kicks, and stronger ones to be satisfied. Constant novelty pitches the level of dopamine needed to feel satisfied.

There was an interesting lecture about human (especially male) brain in XXIst century somewhere, I didn't save the link.
