Just read in the List of Open Source Games that No One LIves Forever 2 is Open SOurce? So is it freely downloadable somewhere? Or at least a candidate for GOG?
Open source doesn't necessarily mean it's freeware.

It is if you can recompile the code. ;)
Just the game engine went open source. The game assets; models, textures, sounds, music, etc. did not go open source.

redo them from memory/screenshots/etc? I know alot of work but still. Plus think of all the things people could do with the engine.
If it's anything like Blood 2 (which is also listed as open source) the license is so restrictive that all you can do is make mods. No source ports or anything.

I think that's just the game code. I really doubt they open sourced Lithtech ver whatever.

That would not be worth the effort. It would also get shut down pretty quickly since "re-creating" a game like that is clearly copyright infringement. However, you are correct on the other point. The whole purpose of releasing a game engine as open source is to allow people the chance to do whatever they can imagine with the engine.

I took a look at it, and it doesn't appear to be the Lithtech Jupiter engine source, just the NOLF source, plus some advanced editing tools.

They could make a parody spinoff though, or change it enough to be legal. Just an idea.

If they're starting from scratch might aswell do it in a more recent engine, no?

Yes but some of the legacy engines have some desirability like stability/ease of use for some coders/features/not demanding too many system resources to make a game with them.

Only issue I see is anyone willing to invest his/her time maintaining, cleaning and possibly extending the capabilities of such an old codebase while some more active open-source solutions exist. In the end it all boils down to how dedicated and big the community surrounding the game is (look at duke3d).
At least with the source being open, we have a a certain security regarding the game's compatibility with future OS iterations. :)

Sort of, often times the assets are not freely available, just the game code. That's the way it worked for the HIB games when they got open sourced.

It's included in the NOLF2 toolkit here but isn't officially supported by Monolith.
