How are you going to download the game from steam without access to the internet anyway? It seems needlessly longwinded to download on some other machine burn to a disk, or copy to an external hard drive then copy on to the windows machine.

Kind of the whole point of digital distribution is that the game is distributed digitally over the internet. An additional step which activates the game, after which you can switch to offline mode, pull out the network cable and do whatever you want to keep your machine safe from whatever you are concerned about, doesn't seem unreasonable.

I don't think that Valve are losing too much sleep about not being able to take your money - it does appear to be a fairly unusual situation.

What if it's a retail game like FO:NV or Skyrim that he's concerned about? You don't have to DL the entire game from Steam in those case do you?.

There is an offline mode, but STEAM generally won't allow to you to use it with about 70% of their games, so far Plants VS Zombies was the only one I could play offline.

Maybe not, but retail releases need patches, Skyrim is more or less unplayable without the them. Just the whole mess of linking the y-axis with framerate for example, brrrrrr. This set-up - does it also mean no patches. fixes, mods etc.?

Have you tried running Windows in VirtualBox or a similar program on Linux?

VirtualBox allows you to run another OS on top of your current OS. I'm not sure if it will work but it is worth a try. Some DRM's detect the virtual environment as a debugger so you might have to run a crack anyways.

edit: Reread the intro, never mind I'm not sure how to go about doing that. I don't use Steam enough to tell.
