The technology existed before Wii and Sony thought about using it as I'm sure MS did too. Lots of tech companies make hundreds of prototypes of stuff they end up discarding for several reasons. If Sony had faith in motion technology they would have shipped their console with it. They didn't, so they reacted to the success of the Wii Remote by launching their copycat years later. Do you really think that PS Move would exist without the Wii Remote before it? Sony discarded that tech demo in your article because they didn't see it as being viable.

I was talking about Sixaxis and accelerometers. Also, as far as I can tell this thing refers specifically to the "orb tracking idea" and not to the final controller which is a mixture of this and a wiimote.


I think it's a much more interesting and original way of doing motion controls and a much bigger step forwards in technology.

Kinect was "hackable", and people loved it. Especially when Microsoft untwisted its panties.

Back in the day we'd get a console a year after the american/japanese launches.

I think the PS3 was released worldwide at the same time wasn't it? (or i seem to believe at least one modern console doing that).

Yeah, I think it's only been a week or two. Not worth complaining about really, compared to how it used to be.

Ok, I should have said I felt it a more worthwhile endeavour. It's quite clearly not trying to be the same thing as the Wii remote or the PS Move which are both better for some things (FPS for example).

The PS Move is basically just a combination of the eyetoy and a wii remote.

I think the competition kind of missed the point of the Wii Remote. It isn't just a motion controller, it is also a pointer, and it can also be used as a traditional controller, or as an input for other controllers. The Wii Remote is flexible and customizable, and I think Sony/MS and even the developers for the Wii kind of lost sight of that.
