well no i dont think that would happen
sega was bleeding money they couldnt compete with sony and the ps 1 and 2
they had 6 years of bad decisions and 4 flopped consoles behind them ( 32X sega cd saturn and dreamcast )
they had to exit or die

nintendo is fresh of the immense succes of the original wii and the DS
the 3Ds is still doing well
and they have pokemon

the wii U was just a huge misstep

Nintendo's strength is in their IPs, not their hardware.

The Wii was a fluke, which flourished solely because of its novelty value. Which is most likely one of the main reasons the Wii-U failed so miserably. They tried to copy a formula for success which can only work once.

The 3DS did not live up to expectations sales-wise, hence the initial price-drop and the subsequent release of the 2DS.

Yes, they have Pokémon, but they'd still have that if they released it for other platforms than their own. They'd probably sell a shitload more copies of it too. Imagine Pokémon for iOS and Android. They might as well just start printing their own money.

Even that. Wouldn't be my dream. It's just nostalgia. I grew up with Nintendo for over 25 years - hardware and games always belonged together. But as it may turn out, I don'T see that silver line anymore. None of the bigger players can't be expected to let go of DRM which is why I care less and less and less - breaks my heart but that's how it is.

Well, if DRM is a concern of yours, Nintendo should be the last company you should look to for improvement.

In fact, no. Since Nintendo ID, you do have an account-based system. But heck, it just went out of style to treat games as anything else than short-lived experiences.
And the technology behind it - bound to hardware or accounts - that's equally bad. Games are still on life-support.

There are some parallels to be drawn here, for sure, but Nintendo's in a position where they have to at least show that something new is in the pipeline, especially given the fact that they've lagged behind in hardware strength going all the way back to the Game Cube (or even the N64). The WiiU and 3DS's sagging fortunes means that the dubious nature of the "Osborne Effect" may be less relevant to them if they're going to start talking about new home and/or portable gaming hardware now.

They may have been able to get away with electing to not take part in the hardware arms race that MS and Sony have engaged in, but sooner or later they're going to have to field hardware that's at least competitive with the XBone and the PS4 (or whatever is coming next with those consoles). Otherwise, Nintendo may as well go down the route of Sega.

I was going to mention that developing their new system now is about what i would expect from them. They announced they were working on a new system in 2004 when the GameCube was only 2 yrs and some change old. Also, one reason why the Wii U probably could have been a lot stronger a system is because it started development so late in the Wii's life cycle.

Having that been said, I saw Miyamoto's comments and they didn't ring of an announcement per se, they revealed like any good tech company that Nintendo is looking to the future and seeing what will work. Having that been said, 2017 is my bet on release. That won't matter, though, as we'll have giant freaking ants and other extraterrestrial oddities to worry about.

If they use PowerPC again, I'm going to declare that a dead end for them. Hopefully they've realized that too.

And looking at the release schedule of a grand total of nine games announced for the Wii-U for 2015, plus the pitiful offerings on the eShop and Virtual console, I have to say it looks to be a grim year for them. After all, we only have information on about three of those. And people may speculate, but I think had they an Animal Crossing title in development, they would have started to drop subtle hints by now.

As in 'bowling ball rolling across piano keys' subtle.

To be honest, I'm not exactly enthusiastic about the 'collectible plastic tat as DLC' idea either, especially seeing as Nintendo squandered the potential of the idea by failing to provide storage for the figurines, despite there being sufficient room to install a hidden flash memory device of sufficient storage. A high quality model, some data, perhaps even a minigame, plus data from multiple games, that would have pushed things to the price they were asking.

I just hope the next console has a regular gamepad available. I love Nintendo's games but the Wii system was actually harder for me when playing Zelda etc. (Never have tried the Wii U)

To be fair, nothing can 'do well' aafter the Wii and in comparison to the 3DS.

But this whole generation of consoles smell a bit like the Saturn in my opinion. They just got better marketting and a more avid customer base.
