Will add arguments after you actually build a case around your beloved N64. No threads like this are needed on GOG, plenty of other forums/imageboards can have them.

Do you have something against imageboards, the N64, or both?
My argument is that it had 4-player splitscreen for the first time, an excellent selection of games,was the last console to use cartridges which I have an infatuation with for their lack of load times, first console to use force feedback, and the marketing for the N64 was generally classy and badass.
There were a lot of other great aspects to that console but I'll bring them up later if I need to.
And I'm sorry you find this thread so unnecessary and out of place, I didn't take GOG.com for the place to find internet 'tuff guys. I just wanted to know other GOG members' opinions of the N64.
Also, I think we need an off-topic board, that's where this thread would most likely belong.

It's not that we're tough guys, it's that we expect posts with a little more content for threads. I have a Nintendo 64 and it's great, but is it the only one worth having now? no. Infact, despite how revolutionary it was for console gaming and the games on it were quite revolutionary, right now it seems the console to have would be the Xbox 360. It seems developers like Bethesda, Harmonix, EA, and many other game companies favor it. I am kind of saddened because it seems like the PS3 has so much potential that seems untapped by both developers and Sony themselves. Then again, the remote play with the PSP is freakin' awesome.

The Xbox 360 comes off as the spiritual successor to the N64 to me thanks to all the 'pure fun' games and the fact that Microsoft has Rare, the top developer for N64 games. The XBLA is even getting a port of Banjo Kazooie.

I was never a Banjo fan, but what I don't understand is why they can't make a live enabled port of Perfect Dark! That's Rare's IP!
Also, I am near certain that the Xbox 360 is also a spiritual successor to the Dreamcast, as it was the first console to receive many titles, Rez being one of them, that was ported to Xbox 360.
There is a rumor Marvel VS Capcom 2 is coming to Xbox Live, if this is true, I'll need to stock up on food supplies because I won't be leaving the house anytime soon after.

Well I for one was a huge N64 fan... I loved most of the games I had for it, and it brings back such great memories.

I don't mean to flame either, but can it successfully emulate a first generation Xbox? How about Dreamcast or PS2?
Yeah, I know there are Dreamcast emulators and PS2 emulators in the works, but they aren't there yet. You can only go for older games, and while yes, they are fine games, the statement is untrue because it cannot yet emulate all, and I doubt it ever will be able to emulate all consoles.

Actually, Gamecube emulation has made some major strides these past few months, and DC emulation should be very accurate sometime soon (if it isn't already) considering it was the weakest of its generation.

PCs will likely never be able to emulate the Xbox 360 or PS3, due to their processor architecture. PS2 emulation is very close, I've actually been able to get a few games running fairly well on one of my Linux boxes, but it is a huge hassle just to get a game running and doesn't work well for every game. Don't know about Dreamcast emulation, never really bothered with it.
As for "the only console worth owning", I gotta go with my trusty old PS2. I have had one since the week it launched (I'm actually on my second one, I played the first to death) and I could not be happier with it. There is an incredibly massive library of games available for it, they are actually still making new games for it and they are going to continue making games for it until at least 2010 (the end of the console's projected 10 year life span). I have more than got my money's worth out of it already and I am certainly not done with it yet. No other console I have owned, going all the way back to the Atari 2600 days, has served me so well for so long.

I was really little back then, and it seemed to be lacking in all the kinds of games I loved, even now when I look back on it. There were no rhythm games like Um Jammer Lammy, no mesmerisingly beautiful games like NiGHTS, no gripping cinematic games like MGS, and most of N64s titles (Conker and Banjo excluded) seemed to be primitive unpolished 3D games like Castlevania 64, Tetrisphere, Rampage, and Wetrix...
I didn't even enjoy Mario 64 back then, as the gameplay was frustrating: the analogue stick was awkward and imprecise (I can't stand that controller!), and lava levels were impossible for me back then, because as soon as you touch the lava once, you're basically guaranteed to die, because it takes off 1/3rd of your health every time you bounce!
For me at least, the N64 was kinda blah. ^^; Not to mention all its games cost so much more than other console games, whilst having generally worse quality games... the only N64 game I remember loving, was Pokemon Snap, and even then I completed the whole game within a few hours!

well, thar is only a few of my favorite as well, but it is very close to me because of it.
Mario Kart
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
NBA Jam
Pokemon Snap
Pokemon Puzzle League
and a few others that escape me right now.
But you're right though, if I had to choose I'd take my PS2 for Guitar Hero and DDR.
