wpegg: So my suggestion would be to chill. However to beat the scripts, I'd suggest that natural language is the ultimate script buster. Especially when you combine it with leetspeak. Any script that can rip a code out of that deserves the reward! Example:

HELLOBABYYFMJ-ILIKECAKEBEQXCOSL8TRIEATIT-DOOBIEUPDM-GREMLINSNH6U
Take that scripters and thanks wpegg!

wpegg: Hey Guys,

It's been quite some time since I've posted in this thread. It's really come a long way, nice to see. It's been like watching a fledgling whim evolve into a community in itself.

I'd point out about your concerns about 'lurkers' and people that run scripts. That In all of the codes I've posted (a lot), I've been able to identify the GOG user almost every time. I think the lurkers thing is a myth. On this thread however it may be more prevalent, simply because of its history, and it's easier therefore to attach to it. Even then however the profit from such a situation is unlikely. That's the beauty of the ninja giveaway, if someone wishes to profit they have to then sell it on before someone else can reclaim it. For steam keys, maybe not, but does anyone buy a steam account with a cheap game attached? Piracy seems simpler?

So my suggestion would be to chill. However to beat the scripts, I'd suggest that natural language is the ultimate script buster. Especially when you combine it with leetspeak. Any script that can rip a code out of that deserves the reward! Example:

Haha, I don't know about scripts, but I'm personally having a lot of problem separating the 'data' from the 'noise' in that code. :-P

Psyringe: Yes, agreed (on both accounts)
---------------------
Yes, that's actually the method I have chosen, and the one that I'd encourage others to choose if they care about scripters (one remaining problem is that some gifters don't know about the possibility when they post their codes, and are disappointed afterwards).
--------------------
A possibility, yes, but one that would significantly change the contest. In terms of Ninja giveaway, I doubt that people would want to change the "be the quickest" game into a "sit back and wait which robot gets lucky to catch the prize this time, while everyone not using scripts takes a lesson in futility" one.
---------------------
Well, what you perceive as "complaining" was actually an explanation of actions which were necessary to explore the problem, which piqued the curiosity of others. In general I agree though, "accept it or change it, but don't just bemoan things" is a very sensible maxim imho.
--------------------------
Depends. If his superior skill takes the fun out of the competition, and frustrates others because the never have a chance to win anything, then I might ask him to accept playing with a handicap.
Sadly(for those who want it to be so.) it isn't possible, and imo there are much better/simpler ways to prevent scripters from nabbing codes if one wants to prevent them form doing so.
---------------------------------------
Maybe you or someone else should make a FAQ for such and post it in the "Gifting for dummies" thread, or even have OP of this one add such tips/info to the OP post(Just a few ideas I was spitballing.)?
------------------------------------
Who said one had to use this option by itself? One could employ such preventative steps in their giveaways as you advocate and also allow scripters to try and snatch the codes from them anyways(While they also snatch or try to snatch any codes written in plain text, etc.), thus making it not so futile a thread after all.

BTW not saying we/you should do this or have to do this....just throwing more ideas out there and finding loopholes in/exceptions to your seemingly "worst case scenario" type predictions for this thread.
----------------------------
I was speaking more in general, and not directing the complaining bit towards any one person. ;)
------------------------
How does one handicap someone's mind, anyways? Just thinking aloud here.

True, but if you happen to spot it and recognize the GOG gift code syntax, one can crack it in roughly 1-2 minutes without fail. However, someone still beat me to the code. :( (Plus, IMO, a script can still crack this if you code in some dictionaries under the assumption that the likelihood of the gift code containing an actual word is too low to worry over.)

EDIT: Congrats to andrestv on getting the gift!

Alcohol. Lots and lots of alcohol. :-P Also, a Big Brother marathon, but that would be more 'torture' than handicap. ;-D

Sadly, they do, in Spain. I think we have the world record, with 13 or 14 'seasons'... :-(

In Brazil too. 12 seasons (I guess) and counting...
You know, I miss those point & click Pink panther games on pc :/
Only played the 1st one, but learned recently that there was a sequel to it.

Now I remember that I played them in Brazilian Portuguese (even the voice acting was dubbed), what makes sense: I could never finish an adventure when I was a kid because I knew nothing of English...

I don't think the situation is "serious" enough for that right now. If that ever happens, it's probably an option. Its effect would be limited (since few people tend to read such texts), but it wouldn't do any harm either.

Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly. I think you're talking about the coexistence of several "games" in this thread - we have the "quickness" game (where the code is given as a link or as plain text, and you just need to click or enter it), the "riddle" game (where the code is decrypted in some way), and the "obfuscation" game (where the code is hidden at places where you wouldn't usually look for one, like editing it into an old post). If you're suggesting that a "script-grab" game could coexist with those, then my answer is: theoretically yes, but it will destroy the "quickness" game, or at least the "quickness" game would need to be adapted into a form that prevents the scripts from simply taking over. Even then, the coexistence would be somewhat fragile, since not everyone who's gifting a code might be aware that scripts are around (and are accepted), and that could lead to frustration (as already happened). In the end, trying to make room for a script-grabbing game might entail more problems than it's worth. It's a rather hypothetical scenario though, imho.

Yes, I understand that part of our discussions deals with principles and hypothetical situations. :)

In chess (which was your example), you'd simply give the superior player less time to plan his move. If a participant in a competition agrees to a handicap, then usually a way can be found to implement one. It's the agreement that's more likely to become a problem. ;)
