So, this might sound like a stupid question, but do you guys have any ideas for a good multiplayer game, where other players are a bit more friendly towards newbies and not-so-good -players?

I always wanted to try mutliplayer games, since I used to play only in LAN with my friends. But nowadays we have our own schedules (like work and the old ball&chain) our LAN sessions have decreased in number..

So I tried playing the Modern Warfare online, but realized that I absolutely lack the required reflexes, I got flamed. It's always nice to see bunch on ten year olds yell at you and totally own you in gameplay :)

Any help/advice is really welcomed and appreciated, genre doesn't really matter, as long as its not flying simulators :)

Btw, does gog.com have a group in steam? I wonder if I would be allowed to join in the possible group?
I think that depends mostly on the server/people you're playing with rather than the game itself, I know there's GOG TF2 server and there should be plenty of other games covered.
There is a public unofficial steam group for GOG so you can just join that. It has over 800 members so far I think.

Nowadays there seems to be a lot of flamers no matter the game so I think you just need to ignore them.

The custom games maybe but the actual base game can be pretty brutal for a new player. The rating system certainly helps but if your new to the game expect to get destroyed for a while until you pick up build orders and get your timing down.

Hhaha, was expecting somebody to say that. :D I was joking, sorry. :)

Team Fortress 2 is a good newbie friendly multiplayer game. WoW counts as one too, especially if you play on a nice realm, where most people are friendly and willing to help. :)

EDIT: Jokes aside, Starcraft 2 can be really newbie friendly. There are many people on the official forums and the chat channels looking for practice matches, to try out new things, to test their starting build orders and similar stuff. Custom game is a big plus too.

I'd heartily reccomend Dawn of War 2: The Last Stand.
It's a co-op game against the AI, so it's in the interest of players to help each other....

I really enjoy multi-player games. If you happen to find a good (and cheap!) one with a neat community (like GOG's), please leave a note here. I'd love to join you.

Hmm. Has there ever been a contest/giveaway game on GOG that is played 'against a Game-master/AI/what have you' with the need to cooperate instead of compete?
Starcraft seems a bit too competitive for me, and it looks quite difficult & hectic..

Co-op games are the best, so that Dawn of War game seems quite interesting.

Team Fortress looks fun and I even own it. Never even installed it though, should I check it out?

If you have more, I'm all ears

@Fujek: Sure :)
counter strike 1.6 : find the pub servers do not go to the clan servers
yep a lot will flame you, its a part of the game but if you can learn what to do in each map its so damn simple and fun. Some maps like dust 2 can provide hours of simple online enjoyment
there is nothing complex, no killing streaks, no hats, no cover or weapon limits,no trades
counter terrorist:- pwn all the terrorists or diffuse the bomb they plant or survive the round
terrorists: pwn all the ct's, plant bomb and defend it
if you like achievements and better graphics you can go for the cs source version

rpg game: diablo 2 no need to explain

serious sam the classic versions as well as the hd versions online co op is fun, players are kind to newcomers

Try something coop based. That way you can learn the ropes as you go. For instance, something like Left 4 Dead could help you grasp the basics of working as a team in any FPS. it also has the advantage of not really requiring outstanding accuracy and twitch skills as most of your enemies are either charging at you or standing around puking their guts up.

It will also help you build up a bit of a friends list of players you can invite into more competitive games.

I'd give it a try at least, if I were you. If we're talking TF2 then most people seem to be too busy to actually do something on a populated server and thus have less time to flame others (with the natural exceptions). Or, I'm just lucky with the servers I frequent :p
Be aware that some classes and set-ups require better reflex and coordination that others though, so you might want to choose the ones that suite you best.

Neat, thanks ;)

Would you happen to know any non FPS coop games, if I'm allowed to derail your recommendation a bit :p

Well, at the risk of sounding a bit obsessed, The Last Stand is a Third person arena combat game.
Dawn of War 2 is RTS ish.
Hmm, Mount & Blade: Warband has some kind of multiplayer, anyone here played it?
