cheesetruncheon: I liked it.

Bringing attention of an old game to a newer younger audience. I see no problem here.
But it's not the old game, or anything like it.

From the press releases, I'd actually contest that, although I won't know for sure until the game actually comes out. It seems to me the only Difference is that they've made a main character, as opposed to your team entirely consisting of random douche bags off of craigslist or where ever you purchased them from. and that the combat is in said main characters view, so yeah the game plays in first person, as a tactical shooter, instead of being turn based. From what i've heard research and base building, are still intact as far as I'm aware. Leading to an interesting divergence from the older games.

the core element of suspense in the face of the unknown still appear to be there, and perhaps even a little more so, considering you're not piloting black Clint Eastwood, but more Mulder from X-Files.

If you really love the old game that much, install it again, buy it off of steam, buy the UFO games, treat this game like it's aiming to be, a re-imagining for a younger generation that only knows halo and call of duty.

Ric1987: I don't get it, why use the XCOM name even? Not like that is going to draw in the many shooter fans who never heard of XCOM.
Only a few years ago I was saying this exact same thing about Fallout... Sad days for glorious old game series, these.

Played it a couple of weeks ago. It's a timeless classic. That's why we want that game again.
I really don't get this incessant need to make great classics, especially *squad based* games, into FPS games.

It's been happening for a decade now, and 90% of the time, it sucks. I crave turnbased games of old. They tended to be a lot more interesting.

You can get this game cheaper but here

UFO Extraterrestrials Gold Edition

Probably the closes thing we'll ever get to X-Com, Had they added Psi Abilities it might as well have been X-Com in my book.
Isn't this from the people that did Bioshock?

Here's the thing... it's STILL squad based, it's just changing the way combat works, to suit a newer and younger audience, maybe they'll throw in some real-time pausing mass effect style, maybe they won't. Either way the design is to breathe new life into a, let's face it, dead franchise whose explicit rights have been used a total of what? four times? and not for the last 15 years? It gets new people buying the new version, and the old versions, it gets old people buying the new version and re-buying the old version. and if enough interest is gathered they'll have the funds to create an XBLA or Steam game in the style of the older X-Com games. Win Win, otherwise we could have waited another 15 years and got absolutely nothing.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Not really, no. BS2 had really terrible level design, but to be fair it was shackled with a mandate to be a quick cash-in. It did have much better combat.
Wow, it's kinda like the dream i had, where a guy i know, bought my favorite band, then threw them out, and released a rap album. No, wait, it's exactly like that, minus the "guy i know part".
