wodmarach: Have you bought a non GOG.com game for PC in oh the last 5 years? You are so out of date it's funny the disc meaning nothing has become the norm. All this means is consoles and PC will soon be on similar footings except that on console you'll be able to trade them in still unlike PC games.
PC stopped being my main platform three years ago. GOG is more or less the only place I buy from nowadays, other than that it's PS3 and Wii U for me now. And if the console publishers decide to go down the same route, then gaming will stop being my hobby. I don't have Stockholm Syndrome like it seems a lot of high-and-mighty gamers on the net do. I know when I'm being taken for a twat, and when to cut the ties.

But you can sit there happily on your high horse claiming "I'm out of date", ignoring the fact that the vast majority of Europe still buys PC games on disc, and that there is now a court case ongoing in Germany based on the ECJ ruling (which, yes, also applies to the UK) that the shrinkwrap product is indeed a legal unit.

Nettacki01: I too understand how hard it is to get BC done. Still doesn't make it any less disappointing that they couldn't come up with a working solution that doesn't rely on cloud services and a good internet connection like what Sony's planning for the PS4.
For me it would seem, especially with the case of XBone, that they have mainly asked just the game publishers, advertisers and IP rights holders "Ok, what kind of gaming console would you like us to make for you?". Not the end-users of the consoles.

Summit: I'm not the one to believe in most conspiracy theories but this kinect gimmick is just creepy. The whole concept of a device that is watching my every move at home is very disturbing.

Besides it's all to complicated for me. Voice and gesture control? I'll stick with my trusty remote control, thank you very much.
For all we know, Kinect can interpret your face, if you're smiling or not. So just imagine how much this kind of shit may be worthy to advertising companies.

Yup and the official ruling is... non binding at this time.

Wrong. The ECJ ruling is a binding interpretation of existing legislation.

Zoltan999: Creepy is a great way to describe it. I actually think the technology that enables the voice and gesture control is kinda neat, and impressive...real sci-fi stuff coming into existence, so to speak. That said, like you, I am fine with the old archaic ways of the remote, especially in lieu of the fact that there is currently software/apps out there available that allow one to use the camera on another persons laptop or phone, and view/capture/broadcast through it without that persons knowledge. The Kinect camera is basically the same thing...you can Skype and VC with it, therefore it potentially can be used to spy with. To me, that's a bit unnerving. While I am not a conspiracy theory proponent myself, this ability IMO certainly seems to lead itself to exploitation by those nefarious enough, and have the means to do it. Who's to say Microsoft may not exploit this themselves under the guise of "collecting information to better our customer's experience" ? While surely this is a violation of privacy, who knows what may happen, or where this will go. As I said, perhaps I am a bit paranoid, but as my old man used to say: "Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me", lol. It'll be interesting to follow this, and see where it all leads. History shows we can't stop technology, but I for one won't be jumping blindly into the fray until I am 100% comfortable with it. Besides, I have the PC, and plenty of games yet to play on my poor old, ancient 360 in the meantime :)
My point exactly. I can't say if they intend to spy me or not. I don't care. The technology is there and it's enough for me to feel like i'm being watched and that i cannot tolerate. I'm getting off the hype train and passing on the XBone. Just like you i have enough entertainment on my PC and 360 to last me a lifetime.

Elenarie: How is saying "Xbox, launch The Witcher 3" more complicated than navigating though controls and menus?
Don't get me wrong i appreciate the technology and understand they want to move forward. I'm just that kind of person who will never get used to touch screens, voice and gesture control. That's why i refuse to buy a smartphone. Besides talking to my TV set and waving my arms in front of it would make me feel like an idiot. I can't help it.
I never felt that navigating through my xbox menus with a controller is a chore and it desperately needs improving. If i was given an option to use XBone without kinect i would have looked at it differently. But they chose to shove it down our throat whether we like it or not.

By the way, Xbox One is going to have regional locks for games. It gets better every day :D

edit: nvm, current xbox360 has that also?

Consolegamers 20y ago: "My console is better than yours"
Consolegamers today: "My console sucks less than yours"

Evolution of console gaming ;)

Yes, but developers and publishers also had the option to make games region free or playable in more than one region (but for a price).

Blockbuster sells consoles now? When did this happen?

Yeah, that is sad. As the notice pointed, the "average game" doesn´t care, they just want the novelty, status and graphics addiction. Besides the all bad reception in internet, gamers talk with their wallets and Diablo 3 and Simcity are recent examples.

Blockbuster still exists over there? They're closed down here, but before they closed down they sold games and consoles quite a lot.

Eh...they're still around here and there where I'm at. I knew they sell games as well as rent them, but haven't really heard of them selling consoles or handhelds.
Yeah, Blockbuster is closed here too. They haven't had any stores for a while, but all of their Redbox-style rental machines disappeared from our area a month or so ago.
