Andy_Panthro: I played a couple of WW2 flight sims on my friends xbox the other day, first was a complete dumbed down piece of crap that he'd borrowed from someone he works with.

Wasn't blazing angels was it? That was pretty rotten. Secret Weapons Over Normandy was sort of fun but it was just a WW2 rogue squadron, not a bad thing in and of itself but no sim

Andy_Panthro: I then convinced him to download the demo for IL-sturmovik 2, and I have to say, it worked very well with an xbox controller.

See, it can work if they put enough love into the process. It was still a bit clunky and you really did lose the subtle movements that a real joystick gives you but it was plenty enough to do the job well. Thats the sort of thing I want from a new TIE/Xwing game
That is the news that I was waiting for. So great.

It was!
The training missions were a terrible example of how bad it was, and I should have ended it then.
1. They assume you're an american pilot. NOT a good start.
2. [training]You had to fly a biplane that didn't fly like a biplane.
3. You had an annoying american mechanic as copilot/tutorial guy.
4. Allies and enemy radio was just 4-5 phrases repeated VERY OFTEN (every 5 seconds!).
5. The flying felt wrong. From a gaming perspective, this is the worst. Even when you "stall", you still felt like you were perfectly in control, and it was simple just to level off. Oh and you had to push up the right thumbstick or the throttle just dropped to zero. Essentially, it was push forward continuously or your engine stops. Absurd.

Because if something was a terrible example, then it wouldn't accurately show how bad the game was.
And I agree, that game was awful. Did anyone try the second game, and was it any good?
Also, I just want a new Rogue Squadron game, for the new generation of consoles. Someone please go round up Factor 5, get them in a new studio, and get them working on the next Rogue Squadron! Maybe if they hadn't been so stubborn when it came to stick controls in Lair, these guys would still be around...

I generally find that training/tutorial missions tend to suck, no matter how the actual game is. In this case, the tutorial accurately reflected the rest of the game (I assume, I only played 2 missions before I wanted to kill something).
