Adzeth: 53% Male
47% Female
That may be true in general, but I imagine that it's different for the hardcore crowd. Yes, women form a large proportion of casual and MMO players, but for shooters? Averages can be misleading.

I imagine that part of the problem is the tropes, putting women off, but I also imagine that part of the problem is that women in general are less attracted to combat oriented games. If that's the case then it does make sense for developers and publishers to concentrate on the male demographic for these games. That doesn't mean that they can't make a game appeal to more people by toning it down, but it may not be something they'd consider worthwhile trying.

amok: Short answer - yes. which is why we need people like this to highlight the dis-balance.

langurmonkey: So all these professional business people are retarded to a point, they don't collect data on gamers and just guess, the majority of their customers are straight males who want to be powerful and important knights in shining armor? Then put lots of $$$ into a game, hoping they gets lots of $$$ back? LOL no way.
Oh noes, why hasn't Dead Space 3 met the expectations? It had everything what the market wants. Co-op, bad-ass action, white male, social features,... And all the data mining and professionals on market, they couldn't be wrong, could they?

Or Tomb Raider. The perfect example of failing of professional business people. They tried so hard to sell it to gamers who likes stuff like Lollipol Chainsaw; they effectively discouraged the potential buyers. I would like to know how well it would sell without a word of mouth. And again, it didn't meet projections made by some professionals who supposedly know their stuff.

Anita Sarkeesian's brand of feminism is the worst type there is. Here's a vivid and accurate description of her stance on men in general.

The worst part about her insidious and warped views is that she refuses to enter open debate concerning her ideas. She just wants to make money selling her poison and never have to answer good OR bad criticisms towards her overpriced work.
Those are some sad, sad tears, little buddy.

langurmonkey: A one of a kind formula that caters to both male and female players but there can only be one Sims.

It doesn't matter unless a large percentage of paying gamers are female. And obviously, female gamers are not a large percentage of paying gamers. From my observations, most of them play free Flash games.
avatar
HMDK: How is that obvious, and how does it even matter? Besides that, you seem to be convinced that a straight male gamer would never want to play a game as a female hero. Which is wrong on so many levels.
It is not wrong on so many levels. It makes perfect sense. It is difficult to imagine yourself as someone completely different. If you can pull it off, good for you. And when gamers play games, a lot of them like to imagine they are in the game. I could never get into a game, if I have to imagine, I have boobs, an attractive female body and a boyfriend. I have no interest in such games because I wont be able to get into them so they wont be so fun for me. I know some guys like playing female characters so they can stare at nice digital ass all day but that is not the majority.

What is it like hating yourself everyday for having balls and a penis? OR did you cut those things off a long time ago?

You are wrong. Dead Space 3 failed because it wasn't horror enough... The market demanded a horror game but instead received a Gears Of Wars type game.

You said that business professionals know who they cater to. Otherwise it would contradict the reality.

Was this recent, you diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, because all my time here on GOG I never seen you snap before until now?

Ahahahah... so, because I'm born with an active imagination and that I actually see women as people instead of toys and I don't feel emasculated by women in power or hero roles, that must mean I've castrated myself. You DO know that you make not just nonsense, but negative sense.
Most of the action games are not targeted on straight males. Most of them are targeted on male teenagers.

And this is why they look like they look. And this is why I can't enjoy them most of the time. There are exceptions, of course, but they are never big hits.

They do know they cater to straight males. The example above proves EA didn't know most Dead Space fans wanted more horror, less action. Makes sense considering it is much easier to collect data that reveals gender and sexual orientation of customers then what exactly customers are expecting from a game.

Let me say something about Anita's video getting pulled: Despite my MANY disagreements with Anita over... well, 80% of the things she says, abusing the Terms of Service to remove her video was a childish and cowardly move that only reinforced her beliefs.

You're saying that you wouldn't play a game that's directed at the other gender, but making a game for women is a bad idea because they're not buying games that are directed at the other gender. So, if all the games were made for women, they shouldn't make a game for men because you aren't buying the games for women.

Yeah it was childish but it doesn't reinforce her beliefs that many games are against women.

Not that belief. The belief that all her detractors are sexist and want to censor her

No. It is more profitable to sell games for straight males at this point in time. It's really simple.
