langurmonkey: So you think all these publishing companies are just retarded when it comes to business?
JMich: Do you really want an answer to this? Ok No, they are not retarded. They think that the only ones playing are teen boys. How many people have been told "You still waste your time with video games? Why? You're an adult now."?
Add to it the following, Game with concept X gets a huge budget, makes a big marketing campaign, sells well. It's obvious that concept X is what gamers need, so let's make more of those.
Game with concept Y gets a smaller budget, smaller marketing campaign, but it still sells. Enough to cover its costs, and make a small profit over that. But the game isn't a best seller.
Will you fund concept X or concept Y for the next game you publish?
Oh, and by concept Y, I meant a first person parkour simulator, like Mirror's Edge. Likely, Mirror's Edge 2 has been spotted on Amazon.

langurmonkey: You obviously aren't really reading my posts. I never said my attitude is a %1 attitude or expressed this... And straight male gamer isn't %1 BTW. More like 99%. And I've experienced what it is like to be a minority many times in my life. When people want to make money, they cater to the majority of their customers... Okay?
Adzeth: http://www.theesa.com/facts/pdfs/ESA_EF_2012.pdf 53% Male
47% Female
Women 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the
game-playing population (30%) than boys age 17 or younger (18%)

HMDK: This should come as a surprise to nobody, except those sad few who think big business is always rational.
I would want to see a data showing just as much female gamers play FPS and RPG games as male ones. To think multibillion industry has no knowledge about their customerbase / profile, is rather absurd.

roninnogitsune: You do note that you're over generalizing. that is a percentage of all gamers and there are games that cater to Women and they're called casual games. It's the same as going: 50% of people who watch movies are Women, Ergo your action movie must cater towards them even though most of them would rather just go see the romantic comedy.
That is what I was thinking. The data Azdeth presented to me included casual gamers. Not the kind of gamers, who go out and buy a $60 game for their PS3 or XBOX360 or high performance desktop system etc.Post edited May 29, 2013 by langurmonkey

stika: I think companies do know women play a lot of games, thing is, they think women only play Flash games and Facebook games. Ever notice how both EA and Ubisoft have a branch solely dedicated to this sort of game?

langurmonkey: I do not think they "think". They know. They don't want to lose money. They have ways of collecting accurate data too. Ever notice how both EA and Ubisoft have a branch solely dedicated to this sort of game?
Want an example? The Xbox one is going to block used games, now look at the gaming audience's reaction to it

I do not like what Anita did that was not Nice. she basically said men are all women hating pigs in a round about and sly way and then twisted the victimisation back around 2 fold blaming males the developers and then blaming everyone else which is unfair.

A one of a kind formula that caters to both male and female players but there can only be one Sims.
It doesn't matter unless a large percentage of paying gamers are female. And obviously, female gamers are not a large percentage of paying gamers. From my observations, most of them play free Flash games.

stika: Yet somehow they lose money. Companies are far from perfect and large gaming companies exec will often have their heads stuck where sun don't shine. Want an example? The Xbox one is going to block used games, now look at the gaming audience's reaction to it

How is that obvious, and how does it even matter? Besides that, you seem to be convinced that a straight male gamer would never want to play a game as a female hero. Which is wrong on so many levels.HMDK: Oh, yeah, my point is more that women are playing games more than ever. What specific genres is another thing.
