keeveek: 95% of college thesis are shitty and not worth anything.
And Highly Annoying too.

keeveek: Very nice video, although I don't fully understand that "beating the shit out of a demon who wants to kill you and happened to be your girlfriend" glorifies the violence against women.

If my girlfriend turned into a fucking demon, I wouldn't think twice :P

By the way, there are at least the same amounts of games where you have to kill your brother/friend/father , imho.

and damn those spoilers! :P
The part where you evil sexy manipulative girlfriend turns out to be a demon is misogynist. Women get a shit deal out of life, so even superficially symmetric situations can be misogynist in their portrayal of women but fine in their portrayal of men. Like so:

Male antagonist = dudebro power. Female antagonist = sneaky duplicitous bitch is being sneaky and duplicitous and should be punished.

I love the Feminist Frequency chick since she vindicates my misogyny. I'd also enjoy coming on her face.

Starmaker: Male antagonist = dudebro power. Female antagonist = sneaky duplicitous bitch is being sneaky and duplicitous and should be punished.
So it makes revolver Ocelot a female then.

male antagonists are just as often presented as sneaky motherfuckers as female ones.

Also, if you counted how many men are transformed into demons, you'd make a conclusion it promotes violence against men?

In fact, in every shooter game you kill like a 1,000 of male characters. That would mean games are anti-men than anything else. Especially when thousands of male characters you slaughter are brainless and nameless mass, and when you happen to fight a woman, it's always a character of some traits and significances rather than anonymous mass of men being killed on the way.

By the way, if someone turns into a 3 headed demon that breaths fire and everything, it shouldn't be counted as a man or woman in my book.

Not gonna bother with this post be4cause is kind of ignorant , though I will try to reply in a fast and elegant manner.

avatar
HijacK: I'm not going to bother with this kind of BS anymore. This subject gets way too much attention , a lot more than it ever deserved.
avatar
BlueMooner: Maybe it continues to get attention because change never occurs? If a problem doesn't stop, why should people stop complaining? How do you determine what other people should complain about?
What change should occur? It's getting attention because the media loves drama , not because this is an issue.

avatar
HijacK: Truth is: It's only sexist when men do it. Whenever women do something sexist the media doesn't give a crap.
avatar
BlueMooner: I don't mean to sound rude, but this comes across as incredibly ignorant of male/female conditions around the world. Do you HONESTLY think that men and women have, and had have, completely equal rights, opportunities and lives?? Do you really think that all things are equal, and that men are the ones suffering here?

Historically, have men been frequently raped? Have men been frequently beaten by their family, spouses, and even children? Yes. Have men been killed, even to this day, to preserve the honor of their family? Yes. Are there countries where men can't work, can't own anything, and can't even leave the house without permission from a woman? This doesn't happen , but you never know what lunatics might make this happen if they complain over video games. Have men been sold as property? Yes , DUH! Slavery does not resume just to women for fuck's sake. Men make better slaves because of their superior phisique. Are men taken and used as sex slaves? Probably only in Russia. Do men receive less pay and are told they should have a woman with them to deal with any important issue that occurs? I don't really get the importance of this question.

I'm sorry , are we talking about history or the 21st century? And to quckly answer your questions , check above:
avatar
HijacK: Not to even mention those kind of videos are usually made by frustrated , sexist women on life. This is a pretty much BS thing going on. They want to change gaming in their image , a retarded one.
avatar
BlueMooner: So NOT wanting to be constantly portrayed as stupid, weak, incompetent, helpless, incapable, unskilled, immature and unrealistic people who's only purpose is to serve as the sexual property of men is "wanting to change gaming in their own image." Seriously?
Seriously? Do you actually think women are portraited like that in games? Have you played any game in the last 13 years?

avatar
HijacK: Yes , because in their stupid views Liara T'Soni , Morrigan , Jade....and a ton of other strong female characters is not enough.
avatar
BlueMooner: Because a thousand cases of weak women is COMPLETELY negated by a half dozen cases of strong women.
Do me a favour and count again.
avatar
HijacK: Dude , have you seen the campaigns they have against how people perceive women in gaming? You have to see the hate Lara Croft receives from them because she has big boobs.
avatar
BlueMooner: Try this. Make a list of every single female you've ever seen in games. Count how many have huge breasts. Count how many have small breasts. Count how many are flat-chested.

Now make a list of every male you've seen in a game. Count how many have huge bulging dicks/crotches. Count how many have small bulges. Count how many have flat crotches.

Notice anything? Notice how the vast majority of women have huge breasts (and tight, skimpy, revealing outfits) while the vast majority of men have flat crotches (with thick, bulky body-concealing outfits)? It's because the women are being drawn to appeal to hetero men's tastes, while the men are being drawn to hetero men's tastes. All the characters are drawn to appeal to what hetero men want, with women being sexually objectified.

Women are objectified all the time in their lives, why would they want that in their games as well? Imagine if the only male avatar games ever had was a nearly naked male wearing only a pink thong that was tight around his dick and balls, showing every curve. Imagine if games had frequent cutscenes with close-ups of your crotch. Imagine if this was true for 99% of the games out there? Would you complain?
Yes , because complaining about a video game that you do not even want to play makes total sense. Notice how men are always the same stereotypes in gaming? Guess what! You don't see women complain about that.
And as a matter of fact , there are less flat chested women in gaming than normal sized ones. This size issue was mainly in the 90s.

I don't care how we are portraited in games. If I don't like it , I won't play it . Simple as that!

Troll comments like this ruin the thread. It is only a matter of time before this thread turns into some kind of war between misogynists, misandrists, crazy feminists, and trolls. So I'm done here. The monkey nation has no interest in being dragged into such a war.

I thought feeding the troll = some kind of extremely emotional reaction? A troll crafts a message, not to get a response but a certain kind of response or responses. Correct?

htown1980: I've only watched a bit of the two parter about her and the response to her first Tropes video. The start of the one about her seems to be a pretty weak criticism of a college thesis. Anyone who has written or read a college thesis will know that they are really easy targets. I hope it gets a bit better than that as it goes on and actually deals with the comments on women and tropes in media.
avatar
granny: Everything needs a starting point, and her thesis is as good a place as any. Over the two parts, it does cover how she presents herself, how she manipulates situations to her advantage, and other general inconsistencies in her views. Not wholly related to games, but given she has apparently become the face of feminist gaming, I think they are, at the very least, interesting to take note of.
I don't know what was in her college thesis, and I don't really care. My university assignments are complete trash. I would hate it if someone critiqued them. I am not so worried about someone not being able to put together a good argument in college. I will check out the rest of the videos though.

avatar
htown1980: The response video looks good, but I am going to need to watch it when I can give it full concentration. I find the sound or the voice a little difficult to follow.
avatar
granny: I thought the response was fantastic, and rather highlights Sarkessian's one-sided view point.
As I said, I will definitely watch the rest of the vid, but I think the whole point of the tropes video is to put forward an opinion and back that up with some evidence, I think that she is just advocating a particular viewpoint. I think that is where people have some difficulty understanding her videos. It's like the difference between someone writing an opinion piece in the paper and someone writing a news article.

avatar
htown1980: I am more interested in videos like this that might attack her views on tropes rather than videos that seem to attack her personally or nit pick on things that I don't care about.
avatar
granny: Well... what is it you don't care about, specifically? From what I've seen, a lot of what Sarkessian presents is biased and one-sided, and it seems the best way to counter that is not so much to spend hours of ones life picking apart, in detail, everything she says, but rather to focus on her attitude and how she goes about business (as it were). If you plant the idea that someone might be talking nonsense, people might just start to do some critical thinking.

Although personal attacks, I agree, are not how you win an argument.
My view is the opposite. I like to see people pick apart her arguments and then other people pick apart those arguments. But I am into that kind of stuff.

I don't care if:
1. She has made other arguments in the past that are invalid.
2. She hates men/she has a bad attitude.
3. She makes millions of dollars out of her videos.

I'm a big fan of critical thinking but to me, that involves looking at her arguments, presenting counter arguments, etc.

Personally, whilst there are obviously exceptions, I don't see how people can argue that the Damsel in Distress Trope isn't a significant, commonly used trope in games (particularly action games - as opposed to strategy, etc).

Why does my comment have to be a troll comment? Why can't I find women despicable?
I'm surprised this thread is still going.

I've never seen her videos swaying anyone's opinion on feminism or sexism, while I agree that sexism should be discussed in videogames, the mere fact that she only mentions the female issues with only a passing remark on the mis-representation of males is sexist in itself.

(Yes, I know it's called "Tropes Vs. Women", but does it really make it any less sexist?)

I guess the point I'm making is: Her videos are not that good, if you already agreed with her views (even without knowing) you'll keep on agreeing with her, if you disagreed, chances are you won't be the least bit swayed

I hate that kind of argument. She thinks sexism in video games is a serious issue and addresses that. She doesn't have any obligation to use her time on making videos about men being misrepresented in games.

If you think male sexism is an important issue in video games, maybe you should make a video about it.

So what you're saying is that her products are not required to represent both genders equally?

Well what do you know, it sounds just like the games she's addressing

You sure about that? I recall seeing quite a few of "Why must I play as a ~30 year old white male character? Why can't I create my own character?" threads around, for quite a few of the games. Few games require the use of a specific character as the protagonist, and it's mostly those which use previously established characters (example, The Witcher). Why must the Desert Ranger be a male, why can't the new recruit in Alpha Protocol be a woman, why is the person sent in the middle of Dubai in Spec Ops: The Line a male? And more specifically, why are the defaults a ~30 something white male? Why not a latino, black, or asian? Why not a 23 year old, or a 45 year old? Does the story change if you change the character? Or is it that we assume "The 'hero' should be like this" and claim anything else as false subconciously?
