So I downloaded Ultima series game Martian Dreams because the author of Game Coding Complete was a main programmer for it and I wanted to see the work of the person I'm learning from. I can look at my shelf of listed games but I dont know how to open them to play... Help?

Have you installed the file you just downloaded?

I downloaded the GOG installer but I'm not sure how to use it or how to check if I've downloaded my game. When I click on "download now" on the installer it just takes me to a website to download.... the GOG installer. Just getting into this stuff but it's already apparent I'm a foreigner here...
Just to cover all bases here: GoG isn't like Steam - purchasing a game doesn't automatically download and install it (I say this because I have a tiny inclination that the user expected this to be the case; they looked at their shelf and couldn't see a way to play - steam has sort of spoiled people me thinks)

You can download the game by clicking on the box art and selecting a download option (if you don't have the GoG downloader installed then turn that feature switch to off); You then have to manually install the game (like before steam times :p)

Once installed you run the game from the created shortcut on your desktop.

If I am mistaken then I apologize.
Thanks, I will try that now

If you download the game with the GOGDownloader, just click on the magnifying glass and it will open the folder with the installer for you.
Yes, steam is what got my expectations up, I just got into that area too. I did find the installer in my start menu now let's see if I can learn it's tricks and possibly play a game!

If you find it very difficult to use the downloader, you have always an option to download the game directly from your web browser, just turn off gog downloader. After the regular download is complete, just double click the file you`ve downloaded and install the game as usual.
Thanks ! You are all awesome. Thanks for the help and maybe I will be able to return the favor some day when I'm a veteran GOGger, or whatever sounds less dorky than that...

Welcome to GOG! ;p
Huh. I'm always pleasantly surprised when newly minted PC gamers come to GOG as we all know that the majority of the newer generation of gamers aren't usually into the old stuff.

That said, even though I've been gaming since the C64 (and later Amiga) days most of the really old stuff doesn't appeal to me at all anymore possibly due to it being either way too simplistic or just feeling incredibly awkward to play these days. There's something to be said about modern sensibilities.

Welcome to GOG - oh and the word is Goglodyte ;-D Good luck with your studies and hope to see you around the forum...
So any advice on some of the best games on GOG right now? BTW, just because I'm new to PC gaming doesnt mean I'm a teen. It would be fun, but no. I'm beyond that scary adventure in my life! :)
