The famous Wing Commander universe serves as the setting for this exceptional Elite-style game. It draws its concept and inspiration from this classical masterpiece and elevates it to a whole new level. An entire galaxy is there to explore or find a good trade route, get rich, and pimp out your ship. ;)

marlowespade: EDIT: I see that it doesn't require one - but will DOSBox recognize my USB joystick?
There's no reason why it wouldn't, but the game may not recognize more than 2, or at most 4, of the buttons. You'd need to use either a third party mapper or DOSBox's mapper for that.
Hi GOGers! I just spent an amazing evening with Privateer :-) I even bought my favourite beer, Pilsner Urquell to celebrate. It was ages ago since I was in Gemini Sector.
But wow, this game is still as good as it was, even better as in the old days, when I played it without the speech pack. But GOG's Privateer recognized my Logitech joystick! Very nice!
I never played Righteous Fire ad-one so I can't say I miss it but I hope GOG will give it to us free one day (Privateer soundtrack also would be nice).
Now you must excuse me I must go back to the game. I still need a lot of cash to buy Centurion :-)
I hope you all enjoy Privateer as much as me :-)

Sogi-Ya: Except for Wing Commander 5 .... GOG, I will take it as a personal affront is you guys attempt to acknowledge WC5 as a video game by selling "it".
Bah! I liked it. Some of Maniac's best lines came from Prophecy.
there is only one thing I liked about WC5: the Vampire .... err, actually the Panther!

(I guess the vamp isn't that bad wither, I like how both of those ships feature rotating engines.)

that has to be the best ship design in the entire WC universe.

looking through the ship databases over at wcnews.com it's kinda disturbing how except for the Vamp and Panther, all of the other terran ships are phenomenal step backwards in design complexity ...
Hey a wing commander game! Awesome! Does this mean we'll see the original WC series? (1-4?) ???

RottenRotz: never played it,but looks so interesting!
Yeah, Privateer and Righteous Fire were great games. Privateer was a great Sandbox Flight sims. I had a blast in it, for years and years. Also RF gave alot of good options for ship upgrades.

I made my life alot easier as I killed pirates and sold them as slaves in Kilrathi sectors.... if you did it enough, ships werent nearly so aggresive towards you. Dont get caught with banned substances or slaves near, iirc Constantine or somehting like that, it had a serious confed military base.
Yea, WC5 was a step forward for ship design. I think 3&4 ships were designed with limitations of that times computing hardware in mind. If you look at the sprite based ships from 1&2, they are much more complex than 3&4. Can you imagine a 3D tigers claw.... That would be great. Come to think of it, I think I played a WC5 mod with a 3D tigers claw many years ago.

actually you got my statement backwards.

compare the (from WC5) to the [url=http://www.wcnews.com/ships/armarrow.shtml]Arrow (from WC3/4).

the Tigershark obviously has got more polygons than the Arrow, but the actual design of the Arrow is way more complex with an actual cockpit, weapon mounts, distinctions where the the engines are mounted to the frame, and *gasp* is that a paint job .... the Tigershark is a cone, two rectangles, and a "Y" shaped flat box.

The thing is that I would just chalk this up to them having limited resources but the Vamp and the Panther kinda foul up that theory and when you go look at the Nephilim fighters it gets completely blown out of the water 'cause very single one of them has a more through design than the Tigershark.
Oh.. Sorry, I did read that wrong. The Tigershark looks terrible indeed!!! I only remembered the cool rotating engine one from WC5. At least the cap ships were not big boxes. :-)
lol, yeah, those were the and the [url=http://www.wcnews.com/ships/wcppanther.shtml]Panther.

arguably two of the best fighters in the series, but them being "good" wasn't the only reason they ended up being the two most played fighters in WC5. :P
Great release, I've always wanted to play this. I hope the rest of the series will follow (actually, I'm currently working my way through Wing Commander 1 on my Amiga and enjoying it immensely; would be neat to be able to continue the story with WC2 at some point).

The EA-deal seems like the best thing that's happened here at GOG in ages.
I've two more chapters in The Witcher to go, and then I can get this game. =D
PLEASE PLEASE -- Release Privateer 2 for Win7 And I would Buy instantly 2 Copies (one for me and one for supporting this).

Priv2 is mein ALL TIME Favorite.
Clive Own and many other Stars... superb Gameplay (with Joystick).
Best game ever!
I miss it soooo much... and the patches to run on DosBox/WinXYZ are not as good to enjoy this game as it deserves...

StickySweater: This game does not require a joystick. Can't wait to give this a go.

If you like this, you may like these two remakes as well.

They take some time to get working, but they're fun. I still prefer the polish of the original though.
It does not require a joystick, but I cannot imigine playing any flight based game without one.
