The moment you start this game it becomes clear that it's a homage to the acclaimed X-COM series. UFO: Aftermath isn't just a dusted-off iteration of the classic series, however. In many respects it's an improvement.
UFO: Aftermath is a real-time strategy/tactical game and the first title in the UFO series by ALTAR Interactive. Many gameplay elements, most notably the global view, are reminiscent of the X-COM series. The key difference is that the actual combat isn't turn-based but is instead performed in real-time, with an "active pause" feature. Such fundamental differences don't often work in a spinoff's favor, but UFO: Aftermath somehow managed to pull it off - its combat system is simply great. The game's value is only supplemented by the great storyline. With the Earth in ruins and faced against insane odds, what will you do to reclaim what has been lost?
Sweet thanks for this. i enjoyed te game when it first came out. The intro is one of the best of any game and left you feeling unsettled.
I would recomend this to anyone whol loved the x-com games.
Oh,great! I actually like UFO series way more than X-COM ones - sadly, Aftermath is to me the weakest part of the series. Still, it's very enjoyable and VEERY atmospheric. I'd reccommend this to any X-Com fan, along with the rest of the series.
I played it a few years back. I wouldn't really call it an XCOM game, it is more in keeping with games like Fallout Tactics and Silent Storm. So awesome, but not paints-soilingly awesome.
damn it that was supposed to go into reviews. gtttrrrr

*waits for UFO:Aftershock*
Not excited about Aftermath, but I'm looking forward to Aftershock - I skipped it when it was first released commercially because of Starfuck. Will Extraterrestrials make it through this deal too, GOG?? I can only hope...
ET is a different company, if I recall correctly. Aftermath, Aftershock, and Afterlight are one branch of XCOM (based on humanity losing and research meaning nothing :p) and ET is another branch (based on being very difficult, loads of fun, and having massive body counts :p).
Sounds sexy, gonna have to check this one out.
Wow, I voted for this game to be added to GOG just a few hours before it was added, spooky!
I have this on CD/DVD already, but it's certainly the type of game that belongs on here. Not a classic, but a playable game overlooked by many.

Personally I found Aftershock to have many problems that ultimately crippled it for me. Largely useless research, very repetitive levels and slooooooooooow loading times put me off in the end. I don't know if any of this was fixed by patches or if GOG will alleviate some of these problems, but I'd be cautious if I were you.
Yeah, a major complaint with Aftermath is the pointlessness of most research. In XCOM and UFO:ET (and maybe the later After*), research was your bread and butter. You felt good when you discovered laser technology.
In Aftermath, your bread and butter is finding more human guns. A plasma rifle is nice, but a G-11 is even better.

They really needed to ditch the base building aspect of the game. The bases were completely and utterly useless.
Build a base. Build a barracks. See that territory go down to cultists without giving you the option to use your ground forces to repel them. Then when you use your main teams to purge the cultists your base and all its staff emerge completely unscathed.
Completely and utterly rubbish and left the game feeling unfinished. Equally, any research towards restraining the cultists and stopping them from being able to seize territories had no effect at all. Had they removed that completely useless aspect of the game then it would have actually been much better for it.
Oh hey you guys there's also UFO: Alien Invasion too.

I don't know how it compares to Aftermath and Aftershock, but I had a blast in UFO:AI

I can't stand the "one hit = death" mechanic in the X-Com games...did any of the UFO games improve on that?
