It’s a Steal!

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/thief_gold]THIEF™ GOLD is the definitive version of Thief: The Dark Project, the first game that introduced sound and light (or silence and shadows) as stealth gameplay mechanics, so there is no way you can sneak past this gem on GOG.com for just $9.99.

Garrett, the main protagonist in Thief trilogy, is one of the gaming’s most appealing hidden anti-heroes. Sure, he’s a thief (and a killer!), but he makes it up with sarcasm, intelligence, and rougish appeal. Thief’s surprisingly elaborate storyline throws Garret between a rock and a hard place where he needs to restore the political and magical balance of the city by using silence, stealth, and thievish skills as a weapon. The chaotic Pagans and technological Hammerites are preparing to tear the city apart in their battles with each other, and it seems that only a little judicious theft can keep these titani forces from clashing. No matter who's the employer and who's the victim, he plans to stay neutral and is always upholding his beliefs with a simple key principle: always get the loot.

In THIEF™ GOLD, you have a wide range of equipment at your disposal: a blackjack, a sword, lockpicks, holy water, explosive mines, flash bombs, and seven types of arrows to assist you on 12 treacherous missions in a steampunk-medieval metropolis called the City. The game’s FPS mechanics are a big change from then-traditional DOOMlike “shoot and run” to the unthinkable "it's quite amazing how much fun it can be to avoid action". The game received much critical acclaim (92! Metascore), with reviews ranging from “immersive gaming experience”, through “bloody good”, to the quite expected “my favorite game of all time”.

You don’t have to get your hands dirty to get THIEF™ GOLD from GOG.com’s secret stash for $9.99.
OH MY GOD!!!! My favorite game, maybe ever. This one is the most atmospheric, immersive and genuinely scary game I think I've ever played. This, right here is why GOG kicks sooooo much butt!!! I was heartbroken when it was revealed that it was nigh impossible to get the original game to run on original multicore processors, I had kept my disk safe for years hoping to one day be able to bust it out again! Thank you so much for this!
Finally !

Looking Glass Studios FTW! Thief, a very-very-must-buy. This game defined the stealth word for me.

Is it funny or sad that I know all locations the screenshots were taken from? :p

A funny thing for sure is how the game is called, in the EULA it is Thief: The Dark Project (Thief 1), and in the release it's THIEF GOLD all in uppercases. Oh these funny right holders peoples.
Hell yeah!!!
F@%k yeah! :D
Anxious to hear what GOG changed/added. :)
:OOOOOO
TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!
Ironic I think that Thief is now and I would buy it instantly except for the little fact that my credit card was stolen on me just days ago. I am currently awaiting a replacement. Hopefully the damnable thief doesn't get too far away.

Anyway, awesome release GOG. I can't wait to add this one to my shelf.
I was hopping that Thief would get released on here, just didn't think it would be so quick. Hopefully this is a sign that Thief 2 and System Shock 2 will also get released since they all run on the exact same engine(the Dark places engine) so it wouldn't be really any work to get them working on modern systems, pending EA will allow you guys to release System shock 2.

Ahh well off to go transfer some funds..
Should include DomEd.
Just yesterday I felt a lot like playing Thief after activating EAX on my system. I just thought "I bet it's gonna be the next game on GOG anyway". And here it is. Gotta love GOG. :)

Lodium: Is it weird that i never heard about this game?
Since it seams fairly popular what kind of games can this be compared too and is it worth buying?
Yes, as somebody said before me, it is weird :)

Only game, I can think of, you can compare Thief to, is Amnesia: The Dark Descent: Developers of Amnesia said themselves that they were heavily inspired by Thief, when they were creating this game. Only significant difference is, that Thief still gives you tools to escape from pressing situation (sword, noise arrows, flash bombs or even fighting), or solve it in some other manner than stealth, whereas Amnesia is pure stealth - you he no weapons (!) and no means to defend yourself. Your only option is stealth.

It may seem that Amnesia is better in this regard, but that is purely subjective point of view. In thief, Garret (main protagonist) is very bad swordsman, and your attacks are significantly weaker after enemy knows you are there (you lost the advantage of surprise). And the best taffers out there always try to ghost through levels (which means, nobody saw me, no killing and no alarm).

If it is worth buying? Sorry, but this question is completely incompetent. Yes, it is very well worth buying. :D
Nicolas Cage, is that you? The cover picture definitely has a passing resemblance.
GOG, may I ask you to do this special article about Thief mods (fan missions), you do once in a while about different games?

Because Thief has one of the largest fan communities (to my knowledge) on Internet and tons of modifications and fan missions. Some of them are, arguably, on par, or even better, as the game itself.

Not only it will introduce new people to Thief fms and mods, but it will also prolong replayability of the game.
