Today's second release is, beyond doubt, the most oldschool one in GOG.com's history. Read below to find out why.

The Anthology includes Zork I, Zork II, Zork III, Beyond Zork, Zork Zero, and Planetfall. This means six titles in total, all hailing from the 1980s, weighing in at a whopping nine megabytes. Yep, that means just around one floppy disk per game.
That means plain text and gameplay based on text input, but beneath the rough exterior lies a beauty that's hard to find in more modern games. Countless unforgettable situations and descriptions from the Zork series have become iconic in more contemporary fiction, both printed and interactive.
With such timeless and absolutely enthralling games, set in a crazy, surreal world, packed with a witty narrative and sarcastic, dark humor, what's there not to love?
So light your bronze lantern, pick up that Elvish sword of great antiquity and embark on a journey to (re)discover the world of Zork. You will not be disappointed.
I believe Red_Avatar is confusing 'freeware' and 'public domain'.

WiNG: How come there is no HD wallpaper of this one? :P

Venom: We made one especially for you, enjoy! :)
Hehe, I downloaded the map pack, there's definitely some cool wallpaper material there. In case you ever want to update it.

(I love maps...)

SLP2000: I'm sure we'll get second Zork pack, this time with Return to Zork, Zork Nemesis, Zork: Grand Inquisitor for 9.99$
Nah, Grand Inquisitor will probably be by itself.

Cook: AndrewC has got that one right. Activision released the three Zork games for free for a period of time. Unfortunately it's not the case right now.

As for Abandonia, they offer other games for free as well, but still it doesn't mean these games are freeware - Monkey Island for example!
Actually no we don't. We don't offer any games that are still being sold or actively protected. If you manage to download Monkey Island from Abandonia, I'll give you a Ferrari.

And about freeware: I tried to find a clear definition of the word but it seems every site has a different opinion on that as well. Seems it's not quite as hard cut as I thought it was. Maybe the legal discussion I was following, was one where the game was freely available to distribute whereas GTA, it seems, is not. Once you start distributing a game, it would be very hard to control and to revoke the license because there would be tons of copies around the Internet with the original documentation that states it's freeware and free to be distributed.
Ya know, I'm a little surprised the pack doesn't include the Undiscovered Underground. It was originally released (if I'm not mistaken) at the same time as Grand Inquisitor. Maybe it will be one of the GI bonus contents.

Sorry, but the best way to maximize my chances of getting a reply from GOG staff seemed to be to quote one of you ;-)

I'll ask the question again: What on Earth is Planetfall doing in the Zork pack? That seems like the weirdest bundling decision you could come up with. Not only is it not connected to Zork in any way, it is also the first game in its own series. This means that if and when you include Stationfall in another pack, I'll have to buy the entire Zork pack (of which Planetfall is the only game I'm really interested in) in order to have both games in the series. And making a pack of a series, and including a completely random and unrelated game is just... weird. Well?

That is probably a better question for Activision since Planetfall has been bundled in the Zork Anthology since it's release in the 90s.

pawelgr5: Seems like community "guessed" your "new" games without any problems. Well keep em coming ;) Hope you can give us System Shock 2 soon. This one is rather not for me but I am sure it brings nostalgic feelings for many people.
avatar
DosFreak: They are good games. Nostalgia doesn't have to have anything to do with it.
Exactly. The infocom text games are more like interactive literature. It's the story that you get to explore (and the writing style, which is entertaining in its own right) that makes these titles valuable.

You're kidding! No, you're not...

Okay, I guess it's out of GOG's hands then. I just really hope that if and when Stationfall is released in another pack, Planetfall will be included also.
ha. download now: 9mb

I'm just going by memory here but I think Planetfall did appear in one of the other collections released at the same time.

EDIT: Yes it did. The Mystery Collection (for some reason.)
The Mystery Collection (1995; contained Deadline, Lurking Horror, Moonmist, Sherlock: The Riddle of the Crown Jewels, Suspect and The Witness. Zork Zero and Planetfall were a bonus in some packages)
The Adventure Collection (1995; contained Border Zone, Plundered Hearts, Cutthroats, Trinity and Infidel)
The Comedy Collection (1995; contained Bureaucracy, Hollywood Hijinx and Nord and Bert Couldn't Make Head or Tail of It)
The Fantasy Collection (1995; contained Spellbreaker, Enchanter, Sorcerer, Seastalker and Wishbringer)
The Science Fiction Collection (1995; contained Suspended, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Starcross, Stationfall and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy)

Ok, it's my bad about the Monkey Island games - you can't download them from Abandonia. But I don't recall "The Adventures of Willy Beamish" (being the first example that came to my mind) being published as a freeware nor for free, or am I wrong? Either way, my point was that there are some games available on Abandonia that clearly aren't freeware.

You, sir, have just sold me the game because of this

Well we probably could remove it, but wouldn't you guys and gals be like: "Why didn't you add Planetfall to the collection if you're selling The Zork Anthology" ;)

Instead you'll do the sensible thing and include it in TWO packs, both the Zork Anthology and as a free extra with the sequel?

.. of course, then there'll be people bitching that they don't want to pay for the same game twice... especially given the extremely high price of Zork Antology...
