Today's second release is, beyond doubt, the most oldschool one in GOG.com's history. Read below to find out why.

The Anthology includes Zork I, Zork II, Zork III, Beyond Zork, Zork Zero, and Planetfall. This means six titles in total, all hailing from the 1980s, weighing in at a whopping nine megabytes. Yep, that means just around one floppy disk per game.
That means plain text and gameplay based on text input, but beneath the rough exterior lies a beauty that's hard to find in more modern games. Countless unforgettable situations and descriptions from the Zork series have become iconic in more contemporary fiction, both printed and interactive.
With such timeless and absolutely enthralling games, set in a crazy, surreal world, packed with a witty narrative and sarcastic, dark humor, what's there not to love?
So light your bronze lantern, pick up that Elvish sword of great antiquity and embark on a journey to (re)discover the world of Zork. You will not be disappointed.
I'm not into adventure or interactive fiction, but even I consider buying Police Quest and Zork.

It's an awesome banner by the way, the Zork banner. Best banner since the King's Quest one, if I'm not mistaken (the one that had the pixelated wizard).

bspline: To anyone who downloaded, how are the feelies scans? I still have both Masterpieces CDs, Complete Works and Zork Anthology, besides a few of the folios and grey boxes. But I love(d) Infocom games since the beginning, and if the documentation is better quality than the one included with the anthologies (LTOIs and CWOI), I'm sold.
The included documents look great but not all documents are included.

So it's like before. Every compilation had some missing stuff.
But the scans were bad, B/W low rez, I hope that has changed...

GOG has added extra material in the past many times after the game's release. If they get the rights and/or locate the stuff, then they will supply it.

A tip: Keep your voice really loud on the matter and it will be addressed (See: Gobliiins' floppy version, Septerra Core fix, Broken Sword 1 download, et. al.)

Good to know. I'm not concerned with material I have in original form (Grey boxes/Folios) but some stuff that is missing would be good to have in all its glory.

Too bad we can't get the real feelies. It was *really*, *really* good opening a Infocom box for the very first time... And there were some unadvertised surprises, like the Lurking Horror Centipede.

There once was a site dedicated to providing high-quality scans of Infocom games, apparently with Activision's consent.
(probably to rectify the shortcomings with scanned materials included with the compilations)

yes, I found one or two of those. But they seem to be inactive for a while. And *in theory* official, sanctioned, paid releases should have proper pristine very good and beautiful scans.

You can try here for some manual scans. They seem decent and also are some maps and cluebooks:

Yes, that's the site.
Oh, and that thing on the main page, with the blinking cursor? Epic! Wish every game had something as awesome as this!

WiNG: How come there is no HD wallpaper of this one? :P
avatar
FlintlockJazz: Good point, damn now I'm annoyed! RAGE!!! I want my HD Zork poster with it's descriptive text!!!!
And it damn well better be in VERBOSE mode.....none of this terse shit.

Cook: Well we probably could remove it, but wouldn't you guys and gals be like: "Why didn't you add Planetfall to the collection if you're selling The Zork Anthology" ;)
avatar
Miaghstir: Instead you'll do the sensible thing and include it in TWO packs, both the Zork Anthology and as a free extra with the sequel?

.. of course, then there'll be people bitching that they don't want to pay for the same game twice... especially given the extremely high price of Zork Antology...

Also.....lol......extremely high price.....Zork Anthology=6 dollars.

avatar
Darling_Jimmy: I remember a lot more documentation than what is offered here. The Zork Anthology I have boxed away somewhere came with some hilarious walkthroughs and a Planetfall aptitude test, for example.
Maybe you could provide high res scans to the gog team for inclusion in the package? ;)

pernegger: It's just that I feel a bit nickel-and-dimed lately, especially with the Activision releases. There really was no need to split the King's and Space Quest series in that way and it feels the same way here. EDIT: It's not about the price, really, charge $15 or $20 if you must, but I'd rather have comprehensive packages whose content is decided by other reasons than business ones.

Can the games be played with modern Z-CODE interpreters like Gargoyle? I don't see the point of emulating a whole DOS PC to run something that could run native on pretty much anything. Though having the option to use the original interpreter is really nice.
What's the difference then, if gog releases two 10 dollar packs of 3 games each in a series or 1 6 game pack for 20 dollars if you're willing to pay the same either way? Just combine or install the games on your pc as you see fit and be content. I know I am.

Also, with most modern pcs being able to handle Dosbox quite nicely, I don't know why one would complain about using it over an interpreter. Some might like all their games to run under dosbox(older titles from gog/etc), and for those who want to use an interpreter i'm sure one could figure a way to use the gog copies in one. Although yeah they could provide an interpreter with the games, but that'd possibly mean getting distribution rights for said interpreter from the developers/etc which might not be easy or quick to pull off.

get ye flask

I'm considering trying this one out.
Wow. this release can be used as definition for what is and what brings GOG.

Zork and police quest serie as GOG? checked. checked. checked. ;)

i think i'll buy it soon alongside with police quest serie [all 4 in one !!]

so - since we have here classic GOG like Zork serie, and and relatively modern GOG like Broken Sword Directors cut, maybe there IS a chance for other adventures - in_between [shadow of the comet - version with mouse support ;) is one of my dream requests for GOG.

and it's great that GOG is for everyone out there - action, rpg, strategies, adventures.

Again - thx gog!
